If my alarm isn't working does my immobilizer still work?

Is the standard immobilizer is a cat1 and the alarm is cat2?

Cheers, Chris.

As above. The Immobiliser is a cat 2, though not anymore I *think*, and the standard alarm is a 2-1 upgrade.

Do you need to? I.E are your insurance insisting on it?

No but I have got alarm issues so that NEEDS replacing and if you think the immobilizer isn't as highly thought of with insurance company’s anymore it might be worth getting a new one. Like you say the old one would still be retained, as it's in the key, so you'd doubling you cars immobilizer security?

Well I think that the Fiat CODE system is actually very good as far as immobilisers go, but I'm sure I read that it's no longer rated.

A full cat 1 alarm and immobiliser can be fitted for around the £220-£300 mark depending on where you go. Make sure you go somewhere that has a good reputation, most if not all false alarms/faulty alarms are down to poor fitting. I've seen some cat 1 alarms installed with scotch locks. \:o \:mad\:

Totally agree matty

I've always used the same guy for years with my alarms on diff cars and never had any issues.

Few years back had a clifford installed on my corrado by the guy i always use no problems, then wanted intellistart and Gap security offered a good offer( £££ cheaper than my guy) so got them to do it, my mistake, fitted wrong, alarm didn't work properly after. After a month of complaining and nothing being sorted i got a full refund

If they're no longer rated then wouldn't we all soon be asked by our insurance companys to get a up to date cat1 system?

not quite oo7, a past rated cat2 imob or a rated cat 1 alarm is still valid from the day of installation if the product was rated at the time, if they loose there thatcham rating years later as long as they were fitted to the vehicle correctly before the thatcham expiry date there is no problem, if installed after the thatcham expiry date, they loose there rating. In some cases proving this might be an issue I might guess

That sound good. So I could just get a good cat1 alarm and all's sorted.

Cheers guys. \:\)

Amazad why the imbobilser is not highly rated. In 3 years of reading this forum I have never heard of a Coupe ebing stolen without ue of a key

Why do you need an alarm if the insurers not asking , these days no one takes any notice anyhow and the neighbours just get pee'd off. I just use a Stoplock if the car's not on the drive/under my office and I've just had an aftermarket CL kit fitted (but only because I'm lazy \:D )

£25 from friendly forum member, plus £45 for fitting...

Use the stoplock (a pro one so a bit more heavy duty) as a deterrent \:\)

An alarm will only do the same, the immobiliser will stop the theft if the thief doesn't have the key.

hmmmm I beg to differ when car crime was in its heyday and the n/east being the worst in the uk I was working in n/castle fitting incar electronics you get to meet quite a lot of norty people as well as being super clued up you could always find out how thieves did different cars, and when you think the bank of England has a 4 billion dollar alarm on it and its been dicked a few times you think what’s the bother of car alarms but after talking to quite a few wrong ones over the years,a noisy alarm is, was, always will be the biggest deterrent to a car thief there is, and any car thief will tell you they don’t want to be seen, or heard or risk a kicking.

IMO ;\)

My car is worth 2k and lives underground during the day and on my drive at night, don't feel the need to spend £300 on an alarm which may well p*ss me and my neighbours off. It is also insured...

Anyone else, including yourself, is of course welcome to get one but you asked me about the CL kit \:\?

Well, I've had the stoplock for years so... the CL is purely because I'm lazy rather than for security (just saves locking with key) \:P

The coupé is parked on my drive at night and in a secure car park during the day. I want an alarm to wake me up at night just in case any one tries a smash and grab for my Blitz, wants to empty my boot or nick my wheels also the RCL has packed up. ;\) My insurance also assumes that the car has the standard security system working. \:\)

I can't believe you don't want an alarm but then again it's pretty safe being a yellow 20V. \:P \:D
