AFAIK, NCB can go unused for two years if changing insurers when you take out the new policy and three years if retaining the same insurer when taking out a policy after the gap.

This was what I was told by Direct Line when moving to the US in 2005. Don't know whether it has changed.

Just phoned tesco's now and they confirmed. Takes the heat of me a bit, they said I had until april to take out a policy before I lost my no claims (if moving from them)
