Having invested in a new second-hand stereo with iPod and gubbins, am considering a front speaker upgrade too. What ones are recommended (not too expensive) and how easy are they to fit? The stereo is a Pioneer

Cheers \:\)

Any other suggestions - maybe a little cheaper - or is that what they cost, I have no idea?

Infinity reference series might be available slightly cheaper Vicks, might even get a good deal at your local Halfords at the moment \:\?

If you can afford it, go for a set of Infinity's - Reference Series are cheaper than Kappa and for your system will sound the dogs danglies. \:D

Vicks that is what they cost. Pay much less and it is pointless.

any of the 'named' brands would probably be an improvement IMO, its worth doing properly though, it will transform your audio experience in the coupe,

oh, if you just go for 'normal' speakers rather than components it will be an easy peasy job to swap them over as well

Would those speakers that Vickster has linked to be coaxials? I thought components were supposed to be a good deal better than coaxials?

Yes Daniel, you are correct, they are NOT the correct speakers \:\(

Vicks: you need component speakers for the front of the coupé, so something similar to the ones linked to at the start of the thread for proper like-for-like swapping and better sound quality.

I'm just in the middle of fitted focal k2 power components in mine.
I've mounted the tweeter flush on top of where the origanal sat underneath the grill & need to put an mdf spacer in the door, better mounting & to space away from when the window is down as a trial test and it caught, how big are they.

The focal polyglass range or are they called acess now are good value for money

What speakers were you using with the Pioneer? Standard or upgrade?

I don't really understand your post above

To try to put it into laymans terms, the front speakers on a coupe consist of 2 units; a midrange driver fitted in the doors (6.5 inch) and a "tweeter" fitted in the top ends of the dashboard for the high music notes (1.5 inch). The technical term for these is "components". The musical highs and lows are sent to each of these speakers by a "crossover". For the price, you won't do much better than these;

The rear speakers are only one speaker (again 6.5 inch) and this design is known as "coaxial". For the moment though, concentrate on the front speakers. \:\)

Although it's not a massive job to fit some 6x9s to the rear and then you get a better bass response - nothing like a sub setup but still better.

If you go down the component route on the fronts is it best to use an amp to drive them to get the most out of them ?

All sounds highly complicated to fit by self May consult a local place (and can get them to put the new HU in as well)

If you're getting serious about in car stereo then yes but if Vickster is just starting out then just using the cd player will be fine.

Agree about 6 X 9's and more so subs but I'm just trying to keep this as simple as possible without confusing / putting someone off. \:\)

If you've not done something like this before then yes, I'd get them fitted (headunit and components won't cost megabucks to fit).

apparently it's best to get speakers that more or less match the wattage of the stereo for best sound output rather than going for speakers that can handle much higher wattage.
might be wrong though

I sold some of those 605cs reference speakers to someone on here not that long ago. From what I remember he was happy with them (think it was someone with a red le).

As for fitting, get someone else to do it ;\)

I put GAS ("Great American Sound".. Well... \:D )speakers in mine, great value for the money. 100% improvement over std speakers anyhow.
Fronts include a system with tweeters and filters.

Don't know if you can get them over in UK though?
