Has anyone measured how restrictive the OE front bumper is to a FMIC, weather is warm here at the moment and I am noticing a big difference between daytime (25c) and night (15c) performance.A large amount of the front mount is restricted as the OE bumper doesn't have holes in the right places.

So has anyone compared intake temp drops as ambient temp drops, ie does 10c outside mean "xx"c charge temp drop, as I thought 3c charge drop was 1% power

So am I dreaming here or has someone with intake temp sensor run a comparsion with the OE bumper and temp drops compared to ambient or even another bumper style. Having the NZ lecience plate hanging down i'm sure isn't helping as per the pick

front airflow pic

Cheers
BTW - I brought the car off a Skier, hence the plate. ;\)

not sure how much of a difference it makes, but the previous owner cut the 4 middle vertical bars, and the horizontal one that they connect to, out of the front bumper so the FMIC is fully exposed. It looks good anyway.

Paul,

In the summer, I usually get inlet temps that are +12-+15 C higher than ambient. (talking about 32+ ambient)
Now with +5ambient I get +15 registering so there is an analogy in the heating.
I also run the stock bumper.
Some guys down here are using the Zender bumper and cut a hole in the centre where the FMIC is (I'll try and get a pic)

V.

I would change your number plate for one with less depth - the lower middle 3 bumper holes are half covered by that one

or move it to the side (I doubt it's legal to reduce the size of the platenumber...)

or drill some new holes in it and have it sticking up a little bit.

Your right V, it's not legal to modify the plate, it fact by the letter of the law it is meant to be in the "centre" of the car but I doubt I would get a ticket for moving it off to the side - heres hoping

Might need one of those PIU style and I think I have found a jaycar kit for intake temps up to 150c for about $50NZ or 25euro so will by one and do some testing.

Takes for the pic but I think I prefer the standard look, what I might do though is try and make up a tunnel inside the bumper to force the air through the FMIC rather than it getting around the outside

Cheers

i chopped my plate down originally for the exact same reason you are talking about, i now have a slightly smaller one made so it looks more oe,

but being in a diffent country i dont know how picky the cops are about things like that over there

the MX5 guys are well know for this and get plently of tickets $250-$400 for illegal plate. May just have to risk it. the Ferrari guys just run stickers but guess they don't care about the $$$. Don't think it carries any points

Perhaps its more the plate then than the standard bumper.

i would still say the standard front bumper is much more restrictive than the piu and zender!

But I'm keeping mine standard or I might get told off by the LE Police! \:P

I personally think the Zender would be a better choice for a FMIC rather than a PIU. Air needs to be channeled onto the area it needs to cool, which is what the Zender does (top, bottom and side) whilst the PIU, doesn't have any side parts to it, allowing the air to do what it wants.

As i've said before, the best way would be to build a custom surround for the FMIC and make it air tight, so the air has to go through the FMIC and can't just flow around the sides / top / bottom

ssssshhhh.....they might come and get me! \:P

i meant the bumper and the exterior mainly, except for the LED lights \:# and centre exiting exhaust thats it!

probably zender is the best one as Begbie says but is the difference big enough to decide over which you prefer the look of?

That was my thinking too so I moved the plate up an inch (you can see the old holes) cut down the bumper and used fibre glass to reconstruct the bumper around the FMIC \:\)

It would probably work quite efficiently tho as the air is channeled straight at the intercooler.

Another thought was to put a pull type fan between the intercooler and radiator to get some air moving.

I haven't seen/heard from Rick for ages, dunno where he is at... \:\?

In the summer I checked the temp with the Widget. The ambient temp was 20 degrees C and I saw 35 degr. C on the widget.
