Hi,

as promised I'm posting some photos and the whole work carried out to fit a pair of Ferrari maranello 550 rear (allegedly) calipers to my 16vt.

Maranello calipers with pads and crappy adaptors for 305disks

I used Performance Friction Rotors (someone in here recommended them and I have to say I'm very happy with their service, help and product)

Rotor 318dia, 28thickness, 60mm pad area

detail with mounting kit

I designed and calculated the adapters and got a friend machinist to do the ergal hats to my specs.

hats ready drilled for PCD4X98

detail of the central hole to fit the hub, note 2 dia + a fillet

I then drilled the 24 holes on each hat and threaded them (that I'd not like to do again!)

drilling the hat

Followed by assembling them and torquing down all hex bolts to specified torque (less of a pain)

ready for the mounting kit

all torqued down

front side

Finally back to the hub, modified the tin protector thingy a bit for the much longer caliper, fitted the adapter plate, and mounted the lot.

adapter plate in place

finished!

all ready to go

Clearance to the TeamDynamicRacing 17inch alloys is almost 20mm!

I've got the autocad drawings for both the adapter plates and the hats dimensioned for anyone interested btw.

Verdict, OK, I've got brakes now, however there was a lot of work involved, designing, measuring, testing, drilling, etc and I'm not sure i'd do it again.

Costs:
calipers+decent pads 500euro
adapter plates and spacers for the plates 90euro (laser cut on heat resistant ss)
hats (free material from a friend on the Greek FCC)
lathing the hats 110euro
rotors + mounting kit 550euro (I'm not sure but thereabouts)

That's about it!

cheers

V.

great work Vas, which wheels are you using to clear the calipers?

ah, yeah, forgot a photo with wheels on

I'm running TeamDynamicRacing ProRace 1.2 the usual ones 17inch with 35offset (iirc)

Mind you I've got almost 2cm to the caliper! but I'm around 1mm from the protector cover of the wishbone ball joint.
If I'd do it again, I'd offset the hat 5mm less and shift the rotor a bit outwards.
I forgot to mention that I incorporated a 2mm spacer by keeping the hat slightly thicker (I thought that 8mm for an alloy hat is a bit too little...)

Verry nice my friend!!!
Are those mounted on 20Vt hubs?
Whats the weight of the disc assembly?

Begbie: was shocked at the beginning as I hardly had brakes, now I'm on 30km from fitting and I've started having some reasonable pedal feel. I suppose it will improve further ;\)

Xav: nope the normal 16vt hubs.
rotor+hat = 7.7kg (hat must be less than the .7kg tbh)
Caliper+pads = 5kg or so (iirc)

(all measurements on my digital bathroom scale)

very impressive V, the hats and disc's even more so than having Ferrari Calipers which are

Did you do some type of brake test with the standard brakes you can compare to these new brakes?

Does this sort of conversion cause any issues with the ABS etc?

Sweet - very nice job there. With those wheels I reckon that you could get a 340mm disc with most calipers! Soooooo much room to work with. \:\)

thanks guys,

sure I could do 340 rotors (possibly 350 as well!), problem really is that these particular calipers were used on 310-315mm disks. I could have used larger rotors but then the pad wouldn't be pressed properly on the disk (or so I believe)
I recon it should be fine for my aimed 400bhp and driving style - mainly motorway miles at night at a constant speed of 160-180kph ;\) After all, my original disks lasted 190K km \:o (not much in them though as they're down to 15mm thickness!)

Paul, ABS is not really related, sensors are not touched (they live in the inner side of the hub so they are unaffected) Still haven't pressed the brakes hard enough to get the ABS working, but should do tonight.

V.

and a photo with the wheel on:

http://fos.prd.uth.gr/vas/coupe/brakes/brake+wheel_1.jpg

Brakes getting better everyday (only done 50or so km...) and they are v.progressive (which I like)
