Getting an non-turbo anywhere near 200bhp will take you a lot of time and cash - there's not a lot out there in terms of proven mods for a n/a.

Highest proven n/a BHP I can remember was around 180 and that cost a lot, involving headwork, replacement cams etc. It's not a case of chip+filter+exhaust=45bhp power gain.

Sell it and buy a turbo...

Sorry but you really can't get an NA up to 200 bhp easily if at all. NA engines are very very hard to tune and release taht mush more power.

Why can't you buy a turbo?

i couldnt afford the money for a turbo to be honest i got mine for £750 1997 few dings here and there but nothing to worry about!! i know someone will say the money you have got to pay for the modifications could go towards a turbo but i havent got much left so every bit i can scrape together will go towards something new for my car \:\)

I agree with JimO, if you wanted 200bhp you would of been far better spending your money on a 20vt \:\(

I have a VIS 154bhp n/a coupe and looked into tuning a couple of years ago, CB cams will cost you £750, chip £90, exhaust and induction kit £350-500 depending on whether it's stainless or mild steel, and to get this lot set up properly mapping at £200 per hour.
Anything after this would be internals and then your talking £1k.
The outcome would be an extra 50 bhp, but you can buy a 20vt with what you've just spent there \:o

Sorry to say it, but listen to the guys here, you won't get what you want from modifying your 20valve vis engine...

Perhaps the only middle ground you could take is chip it and get probably 12-15bhp more which might help a bit, and then save your cash up until you can sell it and buy a 20vt, it won't set the world alight but it is your best option...

We've all been there buying a bargain that isn't quite the model or condition we wanted and then spending more and more on it on different things.

You could spend £1500 tuning it over the next year and the problem is that it will always be slower than a 20vt, and it's not just the power, the steering lock and traction (viscodrive) on a 20vt are better too... Oh and I wouldn't want less than the 20vt brembos stopping 200bhp+, so you'd need to upgrade everything else too...

One went on ebay a day or so ago for £1055 I think! and it wasn't in bad nick... Although you're better saving up at least a grand plus what you get for yours which will be more than £600 in a years time.

If you want to do stuff to your new toy so to speak, then do modifications that won't cost the earth and allow you to save up in the meantime, eg aluminium dial and clock rings, clear side repeaters; that way you're still improving and upgrading your car and adding a personal touch and giving you a modifying fix, which I guess is part of the fun...

I'm also speaking from experience, had an Impreza Sport, looked the tits, handled well.... Got slaughtered when anything decent raced me... Sold it and got a coupe 20vt...
Chipped it for £60, and with exhaust and filter have more like 250-260 bhp= massive grin...

if you couldn't afford the money to get a turbo, you *certainly* won't be able to afford to get a N/A to 200bhp - I reckon you're looking at £3k+

If you tune it to 200bhp and tell your insurance company, then the insurance is likely to be similar to a Turbo.

What about a 16VT? They are cheaper to insure than the 20VT, and can be made almost as fast.

It will certainly last longer than a tuned NA as well.

Cheers you guys ive took in everything you said i see the way forward is to get a turbo lol i think that if i do like you say just get little bits and bobs personal touches then go for a turbo when i have the money and can afford to do so!! i will probably think about chipping it just for the 15+ increase but i will leave it there!! i have been a coupe fan for a while but never looked into them much so you guys explaining everything i have really appreciated that!!

just going to ask about the chip where abouts does this go in the engine and do you have to get a garage to do this?!

Cheers you guys \:\)

Get a loud exhaust and an induction kit and enjoy it for the summer, the noise the 20v na makes is just awesome. With its lower gearing it actually makes a pretty quick car round the twisty stuff, it would surprise alot of people that have only driven a turbo. I would forget about the chip though, for the money its not really worth it.

Having had a 20v turbo and now a turbo+ I still miss my old na.

..................I do like the turbo though \:D

Ex 20v (great car)
Ex 20vt (RIP)
Ex 20vt+
Now another 20vt+

If you do go for a chip, ask GrahamL on the forum 'MR G TECH' he does all the 20VT chips and I assume he'd be the man for a normal 20V.... As for fitting they're easy enough to do, or if you're feeling lazy, Rog at powerfiat should be able to help...

Glad you've taken the comments on board.... ;-)
The ecu box is in the passenger footwell by the way... Look in the how to section you should be able to find the diamgrams/instructions...

You can make it faster by stripping it out and by upgrading the suspension and brake set ups. Of course the latter two aren't free to do!

Sound advice. The best bit about the n/a is the noise it makes.

Instead of chipping, I'd get a nice exhaust/air filter combination to make the most of the engine note, lower the car and also fit a strut brace - that will transform the handling and you'll end up with a quicker car point to point, for less money.

forget any chip on an NA its complete waste of time, its not like a turbo car where you can give a boost increase then match the fuelling. On a std engine no chip will give you more power certainly not something that can be measures on a rolling road. Get the induction kit the sound will be worth it alone. save the pennies and keep you license clean.

Got myself an induction kit off fleabay, looks pretty damn good. But, here it comes, how the hell do you fit it? Plus, surely you loose the warm air from the radiator boost on cold mornings ? I may be wrong, I usually am.....

the last time i managed to get 40hp out of an NA engine was by upping the displacement by 500cc, with cams, chip, intake and exhaust mods. and i had 2500cc to begin with.

listen to the guys, it won't be easy to squeeze an additional 45hp out of a 2L NA engine.
