I think sedicirich runs one on his tipo race car and judging by what he was saying, it is a big improvement for him on the race track.

Looking at the Quaife web site, this exact model is the same one as in Rich's Tipo, also fits Grande Punto, Punto GT, Strada, and a host of Alfa 156 and 147 amongst others

Suspect it doesn't fit the 20vt, but if you do fit an LSD to 20vt then you have to remove the ViscoDrive

I would always debate the need of one as I think the viscous locking diff does a good job. After all it can take the power and distribute it evenly even on uneven road surfaces.
They do become less effective over time though I think - in the same way as on other cars with them. So if you feel like the car is handling like it does not have a viscous diff then it might be you need to change it for a better unit. I think the Mazda MX5s have a particular problem with them becoming effectively open diffs.
Probably some peoples have been damaged because they have been towed without a full front lift as well.

I have Bacci Romano Plate diff a little more expensive but a fantastic bit of kit. For road use the quaife would be lower maintenance but liukily the turbo boxes have seperate diff casing. If a std visco is allowing huge on throttle spin while cornering I'd say it was done in. really I think the visco drive is a gift there are many cars that could do with this but have nonsense 'traction' control systems.

I would imagine the quaife has a fast locking or bias action then the visco trev you may know you have ran both. The plate type locks hard (costing me a drive shaft at silverstone this weekend), thus for road manners I'd say 1. Visco 2. Quaife 3.plate.

How much was the bacci one Rich. Got a spare gearbox now so looking to take it to bits and see what i can do with is to make it stronger, might as well upgrade to a more track oriented diff too if i can.

The Quaife diff is an ATB type, Torque bias, or Torsen. I still dont understand the physics behind how they work, its bloody complicated, purely mechanical.

Visco and plate diffs work in a similar way. When one axle starts to spin faster than the other the diff acts to limit the slip difference by "locking up" the 2 axles together. The Torsen does not try to lock the axles, it will vary the amount of torque sent to each axle depending on the available traction each axle has. The bias is infinitely variable and has immediate effect. e.g. both axles turn with equal traction, 50% torque to either side. If one wheel slips, traction on that side may reduce to say 50% of the other, so that wheel will receive 50% less torque while the other recieves 50% more.

Rich what are the benefits of it in your opinion?

John what strengthening can be done to the early box? I already have a late 5 lined up mind you.
