You have £2500
You want same'ish performance
You want nice looks (So scoobys are out)
You expect the same or less in upkeep costs

And why ? no good posting a car name, tell me why \:\)

I am still a coupe man, just a question to throw into the mix, rather than ask you all what kind of pants you are wearing ?........

I'd want a GTV 3.0 but I don't think you'd get one worth having for £2500.

I can't think of anything else that would be as quick as a coupe so failing that it would have to be something semi-classic and cheap..

Alfa 155, Fiat X19, Alfa 145/146 TS or Fiat Barchetta all because they have that Italian something and they'd be affordable to run. You could get a mint example of the first three for £2500 or a reasonable Barchetta.

Failing that, Punto Sporting/Alfa 164/Alfasud

If I could get a 3 litre GTV I would do, but if not I would be happy with a 156 2.5 V6 or a 2 litre GTV. At least with the 2 litre GTV I would save some money in fuel.

Can you get a 200SX for this price?

If so, similar performance to the coop, RWD fun and looks are still pretty good! Tuning quite easy too!

Something from the Seat Range?

Ibiza Cupra? Leon Cupra?

Why: I think the Leon is a nice looking car, not in Coupe territory, but performance, I've heard is very good. The Ibiza is a bit of a shopping trolley, by again, performance is great. There both good for reliability, and economy for a performance car isn't bad.

Hmm, probably a 205 1.9 GTi and if the budget could stretch to it, one with a 2.0 MI16v conversion.

Why? Have you ever driven a 205 GTi? Need I say more! There is not much on the road that can keep up with a well sorted standard 1.9 GTi on the twisty stuff, it would leave the Coop for dead on any stretch of road with bends!

I would normally say Lancia Delta Integrale, however, although you can find them under £2500, it won't be worth having and will cost just as much, perhaps even more than the Coop to run.

I'm a Italian car fanatic, if I can't have the Pug, I'll take an Alfa 156 V6 Veloce, good ones available at this price if you shop around. Luxury motor with fabulous looks and as quick as they look.

Gareth

Alfa 155 widebody in Red.
Alfa 145 Cloverleaf.

Why?
I always liked the 155 after seeing the BTCC Old Spice 155's. They also have a rarity value on the roads these days and they are wedgy!

145 Cloverleaf. Again, you get the rarity value and like the coupe, as most people don't recognise it. Performance is reasonable too, though the seating position is a bit rubbish!!

Series 2 106 Rallye maybe? I drove one years ago and it was a hoot!

don't know, i'd possibly go down the classic route. BMW 635 might be nice. Though If I had £2500 sitting about right now it would go on a Triumph speed triple without any shadow of doubt. four wheels good two wheels better when it comes to performance per £.

I have had 2 145 Cloverleafs, they are great cars. They didn't have any trouble keeping up with a Clio 172 on the straight.

I had a 200SX (S14 manual Touring)as well. TBH I thought it was crap, as I had nothing but trouble with it. I hated the bland looks and engine noise as well.

Before I saw the error of my ways and go the coupe I did think of a Porsche 944 but decided it would be a money pit \:D

I also thought of a VW Corado VR6 as I had a Golf Gti Mk3 at the time.

The closest I came to another car was after I took a Ford Cougar V6 for a test blast. A very nice car but one look at the owners club website and I realised I would have to modify it, put tribal stickers on it and by a white tracksuit!

Alpha 164 3.0 v6, if I could get a good one at that price. I like the sound of a v6, had an x-type 2.5 for a bit, loved the growl (but thats not in the 2.5K range) \:\)

Personally dont like the jap cars, just find them 'ugly' with a few exceptions. Its not always about power, I like the wow factor and the big smile on face when the engine burbles along nicely knowing you can hit the beans if you have to.

Got rid of the x-type after they became common as muck in the diesel version, but enjoyed my 2.5 petrol v6 whilst I had it.

(My heart always wanted a capri tickford turbo though ..)
