I'm quite happy to map the 440cc injectors, if needed you could go even bigger but that's a 500bhp+ coupe \:\)

Leight,do you think you could gain anything over a Unichip, I'm not worried about top end figure, more drivable is what I would go for.

My car sometimes cuts out at idle or tries to but recovers just before it does. This only started when the Unichip was fitted so I'm quite sure its to blame.

seem unichip may have alot to awnser for if my problem with revs is the unichip . . .

Well there is nothing really that can't be achieved with the Unichip within moderate tuning. That said, I'd be happy to work on the driveability i.e. low down and midrange especially if it fixes your idle problem.

well hmmmmmm. . . .. not so good for me as flea revieled that my map from perfect touch was fueling quite lean and there was alot that needs to be done to get mine mapped properly so we didnt have enough time today to do the tweaking so gonna go back down soon and just leave me car with him.

basically the map done on the unichip by perfect touch was not too good.

coop running abit safer now but lost alot of bhp/torque for now \:\(

flea was excellent tho, very nice bloke for those who dnt know him.

Well not an easy day. Given that Luke's car has already been mapped with a Unichip at PT last year, I was expecting everything to be running nicely and simply check it all over.

When Luke arrived I had a look at his previous rolling road graphs from PT and Surrey Rolling Road (Kenno's dyno day last November). PT didn't provide a fueling trace so don't know what it was mapped to but the Surrey graph did have a fueling trace. Now I'm not sure if this was noticed before but despite making 334bhp @ 1.3bar, the fueling ran rich i.e. low 10s, when spooling up and then after 5000rpm it went very lean entering the mid 12s climbing over 13 towards redline! Luckily Luke doesn't run max boost or redline it all too often, I have no doubt a track session could have killed it running like that.

So before I even start it doesn't look good. The first run of the day confirmed a near identical fueling trace to the Surrey graph although not quite as bad at the top end.

1st Run

*The black line is RPM set on the Y axis and the red line is the AFR set on the Y axis. The X axis is the time in seconds.

Anyway I brought the fueling down to a safe level but it was bothering me as to why it was happening. I could have continued to map the car and bring the fueling back in line but I decided to reset the ecu first just to see what effect this would have. This was done with Luke's original setup i.e. Unichip and G-Tec I that he arrived with.

ECU reset

So simply by resetting the ecu we have shifted the fueling curve (similar shape curve) much further south where it now runs super rich when spooling i.e. 9.6, and then stays in the low to mid 10s until redline.

Luke tells me that he last disconnected the battery for a few hours only a couple of weeks back so I expect it to lean out somewhat over the coming days/weeks. With this in mind I didn't want to start pulling fuel on the day only for it to adapt and then lean out even further, it's a waste of time and money and could create more trouble along the way.

So where do we go from here... Well I have my ideas about what is happening (much the same as with Nigel's problem), but I need more time to do some testing with Luke's car. The best solution to the problem is to eliminate the ecu adaption which I am confident I have already done on my own coupe running the 440cc injectors.

It's never a nice time to drive away with dissapointing results (I have done my fair share of that!), but equally I would rather be honest about the situation so that it can hopefully be remedied correctly rather than with a quick fix. The good news is that Luke's engine is still strong with a compression test showing pretty much 160 across all 5 pots.

rite heres a little something for people to think about when wondering where to take the coop to get mapped. . . in the history of the car i have this the latest RR graph from perfect touch after they mapped it. . .

take a look at the fuel trace and see what you think considering coops should be between 11.5/12 afr to be at there sweet spot as to say!!

http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii211/johansson007/DSC01001.jpg

so from 4500prm thats running perfect?? and bit scary that towards end of rev range where engine under more load it leans out even more. 13's \:o thats definatly not good at 6000+ prm is it??

yeah ok its made 335bhp but not a safe 335bhp im glad since ive owned it ive treated it well and not ragged it around on full boost hitting redline as i mite of now been thinking why did my coop blow up? it was running perfect! lol

what everyones thoughts?

Hey luke, that dyno sheet is from Surrey Rolling Road, not PT, Surrey RR pointed out on the day that it was running lean but they didnt use a wideband lambda and the exhaust manifold had alot of blow, you also have to take into account that the GT28's like to rattle their rear bolts loose which can also have an effect on your AFR (something which needs to be checked periodically). After both remaps Rob assured me the car was not running lean and was not detting btw.

Fleas conclusions go to prove otherwise though and i think you have changed the manifold now? so that wont have any effect on the readings. In theory the engine should have had it in my ownership then as i did 3 trackdays on those WOT maps (admittedly at 0.9 and 1.15bar, not 1.3), and i dont take it easy.

Good to see an 80k mile modded engine with great compression though, thats Millers 10/60 for you \:D

well either way now the unichip keeps trying to lean itself out after the battery is disconnected when the ecu resets itself which then causes the problem im getting and i think nigel gets it alot according to flea where after so many miles the fueling trys to alter itself and causes in my case to lean out alot towards end of the rev range.

surely this shouldnt even happen as theres times when you have to have ya battery unplugged and if its gonna basically balls up your map on the unichip everytime that can be very exspensive on remaps!!

im gonna get the unichip taken off and have ecu fully customised to my car and mods. . .

I had my car mapped by FC Performance on Saturday (27th of September). Here’s my little report of the day \:\)

As they are located a fair distance from Essex, I booked a few nights in Bristol so FC Performance would have plenty of time to work on the car and I wouldn't have to spend the best part of the day driving there and back. Due to the traffic on the way there it was a good job too!

As planned I dropped the car off at 10am and was greeted by the famous sEnny 'co-owner' (Username Ted, a forum lurker) and Leighton himself. I quickly got on to explaining what I had planned for the car and Leighton told me how they would do it, giving a rough idea of how long it would all take. Everything sorted, he offered to drop us off at any of the local attractions but we declined and my partner and I took walk down to Bristol Zoo to while away the few hours it would take \:\)

Leighton gave me a call whenever he had something to report (I had a leaking rocker cover gasket and seals that was quickly identified) and he advised that I should upgrade my spark plugs to 'colder' NGK 7s at the higher boost (I’m currently using 6s). He also called me when the compression test and wiring mod conversion was complete (all good there). After another 2 hours he called again to say that the fuelling was now very good and that he would start on the timing advance but the clutch had starting slipping occasionally in 4th gear. This didn't turn out that bad in the end and he was able to get the job done after 5-6 hours.

When done they came to pick us up as we'd now made our way to the local town centre and took us back to his place to drop the cars off before heading over the local for a few beers and a chat. This man certainly knows his way around a coop and the whole tuning thing; I managed to glean a great deal of information from him (though my missus looked pretty bored ). Leighton also brought along his laptop to show me the data he had been dealing with. A handy program allowed him to show rpm against AFR through the rev range both before and after the map and I was pleased to see a constant 11.5 right through to around 6,500rpm where it crept up to just under 11.9 at the 7,100rpm rev-limit. Not ideal but still within safe parameters even if I do gun it occasionally. He advised that I would have to change to an uprated FPR to get the extra fuel (as he simply couldn’t dial in any more with the chip) and that, if needed, this would be the next logical step before taking the power or boost any higher. For now it is fine though.

In hindsight I shouldn't have had the beers as I couldn’t drive the thing that night! Not to worry, starting her up the next day I quickly came to realise it was worth the wait; the car is transformed. Just seeing the boost sweep up to 1.35bar without fearing for the life of the thing is in itself a revelation, but the change in performance is quite profound. The pickup from 80mph in 5th gear is just crazy now but the change over the last few rpms when blasting through the gears just beggars belief! It simply doesn’t seem to trail off at all and pulls strongly right through to the redline! I think it was holding 16 psi on a GTiR

I haven't done many miles since as I don't want to finish the clutch before getting it on the rollers. Unfortunately Leighton wasn't able to get a dyno session booked due to several other forums running dyno days at the local rollers. I would advise anyone else to book your FC Performance session well in advance if you want to take home some numbers for the pub \:\)

All in all, I would thoroughly recommend taking your 20vT for a tune up at FC Performance. Knowing exactly where he was in the process and how much longer he would be with the regular updates was great, but knowing that he will place the safety of your engine well above chasing pub figures is very important for me. I've heard plenty of horror stories from people having tuning done and even encountered a few morons in the game myself but, with these guys, you'll get an honest no-nonsense approach from someone who has done it all before to his own car. On that subject, if you're as lucky as me, you might even be taken for a spin in Flea's own car. Even if he isn’t 100% happy with it at the moment, it certainly puts things in perspective

A wholehearted for the Fleamap from me \:D

*I’ll add the dyno run graphs to this post when I get them and plot them against the old numbers for comparison*

Well I got her on the roller over Tracknroad in Rainham last night. They're open till midnight on weekdays if anyone is interested!

Anyway he did the run in 5th gear. Apparently he always does as it gives a more accurate transmission result. Unfortunately I can't upload the pictures as my PC was playing up but it made;

292.3 BHP @ 6,190rpm
265.3lbs/ft @ 5,319rpm
244.8 WBHP @ 6,100rpm

The fuelling was between 11.5 and 11.1 from 3,300 to 6,550rpm (where they stopped the run as the power had just started to trail off) Apparently it would run slightly richer in higher gears meaning it would be around 11.6-11.4 in 2nd and 3rd gears.

Steve said that it had been mapped very sensisibly and safely and to 'give the guy a pat on the back' for a job well done!

I'll get the printout up ASAP \:\)

I know. Weirdly despite peaking at 1.31bar (EBC and boost gauge says 1.35bar ) it made no more torque at 3,200rpm than it did at 1.23bar (254lbs/ft)? It carried it on very nicely though and crept up to the peak before gently slopping off. It was still making 250lbs/ft at over 6,000rpm.

It certainly feels a lot stronger from 3,000rpm so I'm not sure what to make of it. It was running a lot leaner at this point before the map so maybe that is the cause?

The main thing to look at is how safely the car is running. If you are happy with the way the car feels and drives then dont over analyse the figures + graphs IMO. \:\)
