My brake hoses finaly gave up the gohst so I have changed them to steal braded. I will pick the car up on monday as I was too busy to wait. I used a brand called PRO-RS (www.pro-rs.com). They are made in Italy and shiped here where thay are cut to length and have the correct attachments added. They cost RM 310 (47 GBP). I will get back to let you know how good they are.

Was there only problems with a particular brand or braided hoses in general on the Coupe?

It was any kind i believe. The steel hoses just aren't flexible enough to follow the necessary route.

Nigel is the expert on this, but I thought that it was the original Goodridge versions that were faulty and had been recalled. They have since brought out a new improved version, but I seem to recall that there were still concerns about them. There was a thread on the old forum recommending that you don't fit them on the front at all (I have replaced mine with standard Fiat parts to be on the safe side ) IIRC it was the length of the hoses that was the problem, so Jonathan, you might want to keep a close eye on yours. You need to make sure that they are not fouling on anything when you turn the wheel and regularly inspect the ends of the braided hose where they go into the unions. Any signs of the braiding wearing and get them off the car immediately. You do not want to have your brake hoses fail on the road ! Phil

From what I remember it was that the hoses rubbed on the car. I put a short section of camping gas pipe around them where they may touch the car. No problems for the last year.

It was that. But there was also cases of the braided pipes failing at the unions, due to the lack of flexibility in them.
Make sure you check them regularly. Wouldn't want anything bad to happen.

It wasnt the flexing IIRC it was the fact they went due to wearing aginst something wher they flex against the strut or the arch liners that causes the issue and IIRC the pass side ones suffered worse as i have found with STD rubber hoses anyway. As long as the doughnuts were attached goodridge said they would be safe but i think someone had said this may not be the case so they were recalled back to factory...

You're all right!
My first set of braided hoses failed (at 90mph) after they had been rubbing on the plastic wheelarch liner. Amazingly, in the battle of plastic versus stainless steel, the braided hoses lost and I burst the inner hose while "testing" the brakes.
The second set failed at WELL into three-figure speeds. It was on exactly the same piece of road, and I was doing exactly the same thing - testing the brakes out.
This time, the special replacement hoses had fractured near the end union and was due to excessive flexing, because they were too long (daft, I know, but shorter ones appear to have solved the problem, although I now check regularly.
In both instances, the brakes had been feeling a bit weird for a few days, which I now know was the PTFE inner core of the hose expanding under the brake pressure. The braiding is only there to act as an external reinforcement - once its gone, the inner is incapable of withstanding excessive pressure, as I found out.
Handbrake took a real bashing on both occasions, as did the underpants!

ALL the steel hoses ive seen regardless of brand have had some sort of wear after a while. kevin also had the hoses pop off from the union, not from rubbing. its the routing of the 20VT's brake hose thats the problem, they steel lines cannot offer flexibility that the rubber OE ones can. even the rubber ones develop cracks over a few years. IMO dont use them, i also went back to standard rubber hoses.

just had some made up costing a whopping £18.49. The hose manufacturer like think auto recommend regular inspection of brake lines, and the motorsport association makes a point that competitors should regularly check any steel braided lines which suffer movement. Rubber like rog mentioned is better suited to this.

I have had the Pro-RS hoses on for just under a year.
I can't really comment on long term wear/tear as they're still relatively new , but I can say that their fitting requires extra attention to detail (eg , the rubber donuts and care taken not to 'twist' the hose).
they are an improvement on the stock items and are very consistent in pedal feel , regardless of use/heat.
please do appreciate the fact that some have had failures with these braided type hoses , so use them with discretion.

I replaced my steel hoses with OE ones to be on the safe side. Uprating the pads/discs are a much more effective way to increase braking performance (see the group buys on Pagid pads & 3G discs).

good comment.
a properly bled braking system with good a good pad/disc combo should be more than enough for EVERYONE on this forum without the need for steel hoses.

Sorry for not getting back to you all sooner on my Pro RS hoses however it has been a hectic few month. I am busy trying to find distributors for my personal care ranges around the world.
Anyway I had them fitted and the are incredible. The braking power is immense and alot more consistent. Unfortunately on the first weekend after fitting I was going home in torrential rain and suddenly the traffic stopped. The proton saga behind me was not able to stop so quick STRIKE I
A couple of weeks later I was on my way to work and turning right at traffic light. I was in the middle lane of three and the one that can go straight on turn. The car in the right lane decided to go straight. I hit the bakes hard and avoided him with no problems. Unfortunately the protona iswara behind me was not able to stop so quick STRIKE II
Exactly one week later I was on the infamous LDP and came to a bridge. Again the traffic came to a halt and I had to brake hard. Sensing danger I looked in my mirror to see the proton wira behind me come to a halt… As I sighed a sigh of relief there was a loud bang as the proton wira catapulted into my car. STRIKE III
In each of the accident I was the only car to drive away but Nina as I call my coop has been prescribed 2 months in the hospital.
The mechanic could not believe it as each time I took the car to him to inspect.

Just replaced mine with OE items, toyed with the thought of steel ones but after doing some reading decided against them. If the originals are good for 100k before failing then that's good enough for me. Plus with 20 groove 3G's and OMP pads the braking is more than enough for me. I'd rather be on the side of caution and don't want something that has the possibility to fail, especially with the wee nipper in the car with me!!

I have had other accidents and all with Protons. They make up 75% of the cars on the road as they are the national car.

all you need for exelent brakes is a good disc and pad combo and a really good set of tyres!
after all the hassle nigel has had, and lets face it, he's luck to be here, i'd steer well clear of braided hoses!
