I've always wondered what a side number plate would be like (Japanese/Alfa style). Just don't want to drill holes in my bumper to find that it looks rubbish.

i have a small plate on mine, its not micro sized like the motorbike ones or anything, and still retains excess width (mainly to cover old holes in the bumper) although the didgits are are fair bit smaller. the reason i did it was to help airflow to the FMIC, rather than cosmetic ive never been pulled by the police for it. i'll try to find a pic, don't seem to have a recent pic, although i found the pic below of a standard plate which i cut down, again to help airflow, the newone is about the same size overall, but the digits are smaller, and the whole thing looks a bit more proffesional i'll take a new pic tomorrow.

i always smile when i read things like the size of a number plate..basically its a fashion statement its your car & can do anything to it you want...its like food but to be honest there are 100 & 1 things i could think of to do to the coop than fcck about with the size of the plate
I'm an old git & happy with it,most of the time

D) It looks stupid anyway! Looking at your sig pic (project 300BHP) isn't number plates the least of your worries?

I know that crazy coupe has a small plate on the front stuck with velcro and has a spare normal size plate in the boot if she gets stopped! Perfect idea me thinks, Mr C Can't see what good the normal size plate is going to do her in the boot? Do you think cops are stupid? She'd still get a ticket or if the kind officer let her go, it would still get recorded that she had been stopped so if she got stopped again for having an illegal number plate after already being stopped and told to change it, the consequences would be a lot worse.

I also know some one that done the same in there crx del sol. Just changed it over on the spot. Was pulled again though and left the normal sized plate on, due to the reoccuring stop's buy the police. It's your call at the end of the day, but personally it's not worth the unwanted attention.

Exactly and once you draw attention to your car via the illegal number plate, the police will be more likely to pay attention to other things in more depth than they otherwise would.

i think it would look good, but its nmot worth the head-ach. having a normal one would give me piece of mind that im not gonna get pulled every 5 mins, police are bad enough round here at best of times. might have small one underneath for shows and pics tho

i'm in the process of getting a front number plate made up and having the letters and numbers cut out by laser.. so your left with a plate thats still white (reflective) and having a visible and correctly sized apperance..once its fitted to the bumper with the bumper cut out to allow airflow to my fmic through the removed digitd it looks like a normal number plate..the fmic will have a black look so to mimic black digits..all my Audi mates that have fmic's have these and they work and look OE

Still illegal though. May not be noticed by a copper but should e an MOT failure and wont pass the road side tests.
Exactly how much extra air flow will this give. I doubt it will make any differnce. most de-catted exhaust systems wont pass a rd side test but thats a diff topic altogether and if its down to getting an MOT im sure swapping it for a non cut number plate wont take 5 mins..as for airflow i'd say its like having an open window..as there's nothing to restrict the airflow...

Talking of number plates, I remember at a PistonHeads meet last year, the police turned up and stopped some cars with 'custom' plates leaving the carpark until they changed them to standard ones. It was about scripts and spacing. I was shocked how petty they were being. Exhausts: never had a problem with de-cats at MOT or any other time - use a specialist. My last 911 had a straight through and was pretty loud with crackles and pops on the over-run. I never got pulled for noise, but if I was in front of a policecar in traffic, I'd ride the clutch

i must admit I'm greatly bemused/amused at this topic. fccuking about with the size of the plate & now even making number holes in the damn thing & decating has raised its head now now I'm sure you all have reasons for this but at the end of the day is it really worth all the hassle at the risk of getting pulled by the feds especially when other things may be inspected as well & at a guess if your messing about with a number/plate goodness knows what else that the feds may be interested in just a guess mind you

Just to let you know that if you get caught with this then it would be a lot worse than having a small number plate. It would be classed as not having a number plate at all! If the plate does not have any digits at all they will not be picked up by ANPR and you will get pulled every time. Even if the cop doesn't notice the plate - the ANPR will not be fooled.

Why raise decats? This is a thread about reg plates. If your really need to get increase air flow into the FMIC that much then I would suggest a better/custom front bumper would be the way to achieve it not cutting tiny holes into the reg plate. thats rite it is about plates..i didnt realise you wasn't allowed to make a an opinion about things on a car being different or a possible MOT failure..as for changing the front bumper some people just wanna keep the stealth look..if you saw the type of plate i was talking about you would see it looks plain and standard..its reflective and the only way to see the difference was if you put your finger through it.. but hey ho..horse to water and all that..

thats rite it is about plates..i didnt realise you wasn't allowed to make a an opinion about things on a car being different or a possible MOT failure
There are 100's of things that are MOT failures but most of them are easy to spot by the plod unlike reg plates. Plates is an easy reason for them to pull you and have a closer look..... ..as for changing the front bumper some people just wanna keep the stealth look..
Fair enough, so do I but I see no need to cut holes in my reg plates. if you saw the type of plate i was talking about you would see it looks plain and standard..its reflective and the only way to see the difference was if you put your finger through it.. but hey ho..horse to water and all that.. execpt for the obvious whitebars holding parts of the letters in place Each to there own I suppose.......

execpt for the obvious whitebars holding parts of the letters in place that particular plate was the 1st prototype..the white bars are now black and invisible until touched.. maybe something for a track day or at the pod then for when you wanna drive there and drive home..

It's just another thing that has the potential to show a bit of individuality, or something that is merely a plate and not something to be messed with. Two schools of thought. However, I put Italian pressed steel plates on mine (and is a personalised plate), love the subtle difference they make. Was thinking about the slightly smaller Italian plates you can get, think they look better, but seeing as my last ones passed an MOT will probably err on the side of caution...

i knew exactly what you were on about, as i said earlier number holes.but really the turbo bumper is more enough designed to cope with enough air flow yes.... to the standard SMIC, however not designed to work with a FMIC. Woody, i really like the thinking behind those plates. i quite like the finished products too.
