Bit of back ground to start with. I sold the Lancia recently because I got an offer I couldn't refuse. This gave me the chance and the push to go buy a 3200 GT as I've never owned a Maserati and felt it was the right time to go for one. This in turn means that although I like my Coupes (I've had 4) I'm having to sell the LE on to make up the shortfall in cash. So I arrived home yesterday with a nice shiney (actually quite dirty after 430 miles) silver 3200 GT. The first thing that has struck me about the car is how much it's like the Coupe. Ok it's a bit bigger but there's almost the same amount of room inside and everything seems familiar. In fact the steering wheel looks the same as the one on the LE only black, some of the switchgear is the same and the headlights both dip and main beam units are the same! In doing my research into the car I joined the Maserati UK forum. There's one guy on there that although I'd say he believes he's being helpful, is coming across as quite, well how can I put this, up his own arse. This gives me another of my little dilemas that I get from time to time. Do I make an issue of pointing out all the Fiat parts on the car and run the risk of alienating the people on there who may be very useful when something goes wrong on the car which lets face it being a Maserati it will at some point, or do I say nothing and quietly sit at the computer with a smug look on my face when I see them all paying over the odds for Fiat parts.
Oh and don't worry, I'm sure I'll have another Coupe in the garage at some point.

Well done on getting the Maserati Stuart As a newcomer to the car and the Maserati forum, I'd keep quiet for now and let the others get on with it, until you're maybe more established on there. As you've said, you may need help at some point and you don't want people ignoring your pleas for help because you've pointed out the Fiat parts on their cherished Mazzers May I be the first to say: Don't forget to check your oil

Maserati 3200gt iv always said it,s a big brother to the coupe As both of them are beside eachother on the drive at the moment I would totally agree with that. If I'm brutally honest (and I hope my Missus never reads this) I would say the Coupe is every bit the match for one. Buying the 3200 was an itch I needed to scratch and thanks as I said earlier to a good offer on my Lancia I'm lucky enough to be able to scratch the itch. But if I didn't have the 3200 I now know going back to a Fiat Coupe is no step down the ladder. The only difference is the power. 370 BHP through the rear wheels is a little more hairy. Oh and I've just put all the photo's over on my site as I'll be doing a warts and all running report on the car same as ever.

thanks for the message stuart, going to look at a car tomorrow, asked about it on the buying bit as i think its not long from england. by the way on the maserati, now that i think about it if you know a company called bfcs near the airport/t'patrick,one of the owners used to own one up to about a year ago i think.it did sit for a while at their depot, something to do with a mystery fault running the battery down.might be worth a phone call for info maybe. and finally much prefer the tail lights that you have, much more interesting.

I've driven a couple of these for almost a month - one manual, one auto They are an acquired taste - I utterly loved the engine - 'proper' V8 (as opposed to Ferrari's flat-plane crank V8s) and more than enough shove. Fly-by-wire throttle is hateful though (although most will have had the firmware change by now) and the suepension can be a bit weird - floaty when it should be controlled and harsh when it should be compliant. However, its still a staggering GT car - its only the tragic thirst that's stopped me buying one (and also the fact that I'd be too tempted to fit a couple of GT28Rs and a boost control ) A much more individual choice than an E46 M3 / Jag XKR / big Merc, although the same approach to ownership will apply as it did to the Coupe - you CANNOT just own and drive a Maserati - you have to look after it. Now we've got the old forum content back, I've found the original thread where I described my experience of the 3200GT Auto (I was given the manual a couple of weeks later) Seems my memory of it has softened, as I was less than complimentary at the time - here's what I wrote: Have had one on loan now for over two weeks.
I wouldn't buy one [Frown]
Good bits first.
Glorious, tuneful and VERY powerful engine.
Smooth.
Decent auto gearbox.
Nice interior (but not if it's cream leather with burgundy suede headlining [Freak] ).
Can seat four (well two plus two anyway).
Looks different.
Bad bits.
NASTY, nasty, nasty throttle. Its fly-by-wire and waaaaaay too sensitive and light. Can't even feel the pedal below your foot.
Even nastier traction control. Fine if only one wheel is spinning, but sooo easy to light up both tyres, even in the dry. Absolutely lethal in the wet, when it's difficult to pull away from standstill without spinning the tyres due to the crappy over-sensitive throttle.
Car was obviusly built to be an auto. Three pedals only just fit in the footwell. The footrest is about 4cm wide, and your foot rests on the clutch pedal too. With trainers on, when I press the clutch, my shoe touches the footrest AND the brake pedal. Can't be driven wearing large shoes or boots. Turn your foot sideways and you can press all three pedals.
Dead feel to the steering, clutch, gearbox.
Slow gearchange (which may be down to having only done 400 miles).
Dodgy electrics already. First car I had, the clock either gained or lost 3 hours A DAY!. Electric seats occasionally move completely forward whilst parked up. Current car's radio has never worked (only done 400 miles). Also a piece of wiring loom has dangled out of the dash and touches my leg. My ten year old son got his fingers trapped between the seat and the rails while trying to move the seat.
Rattles like a six year old Coop, not a brand new Italian supercar.
Lots of backlash in the drivetrain. LandRover Discovery style clunking on clumsy gearchanges (which is nearly all of them with THAT throttle).
15mpg average [Eek!]
I could sum it up by saying that although the Maserati is stupendously powerful, it is not fast (other than in a straight line).
Give me a bendy A road, and I would have been LOADS faster in my old 20VT. Add a little rain and I reckon I could go faster in a normally aspirated Coupe. It really does feel that remote.
And before anyone says that I can't handle a powerful rwd car, when I got my 355, within two days I could stuff it into a corner, get a bit of understeer, then use the throttle to hold it either neutral or provoke a little oversteer. The 355 is beautifully balanced and you can feel it. The 3200GT is probably as nicely balanced, but you just don't feel attached to what the chassis or the tyres are doing.
Sorry if this bursts your bubble. You may absolutely love the car- just make sure you get a long (half-day?) test drive. Try manual AND auto. If I HAD to live with one, I'd have the auto, simply because the manual is so bad.
Its crap. Sorry.
OK, it ain't total crap, but I would be well pi55ed if I'd just spent £65,000.
If I wanted luxury and pace, I'd buy a second hand Jag XJR (not even an XKR), and spend the change on a Ferrari 348.
355 should be back by the weekend, or early next week. Counting the hours.
By the way, this was the thread where M y c r o f t claimed that the 3200 was based on the Soarer and that he could run rings round me in the 355 - what a dick read it for yourself - highly amusing

Its strange how you can take a instant dislike to some people when you look at their website (me jealous? no way!) I was at the Motor Show when the boomerang lights version was fairly new and we went on the Masser stand which was pretty much empty and had great service off the bloke (who knew we had no intention of buying!) and it was opposite the Ferrari stand which had a queue of people wanting to get on to stand close to a Ferrari and laughing while I sat in the Masser.

Me too, but the MPG and general maintenance scares me But its a great looking car Thank you guys for the thumbs up quotes. Jimo I'm not convinced the maintenance is as bad as the dealers etc have made out. If you stay away from main dealers and use a decent garage were the bloke knows what he's at, a timing belt is a timing belt. It's easier to put one on a 3200 than a coupe and the like of the oil filter is very easy to get at.. The expence seems to be ball joints, brakes and clutches, and lets face it, your not going to be running one as an everyday hack. There's now plenty of people breaking them if you need parts and from having it sitting beside the Coupe the lights look to me to be exactly the same so I'm sure there's a lot of other Fiat bits hiding in the car. I see Maserati are looking upwards of £200 for a set of front pads but I've forund them for £40 at my local Motor Factors. And No I'm not trying to tempt you all away from your Coupes, this was just something I had to get out of the way.

and lets face it, your not going to be running one as an everyday hack and there in lies the problem, whatever car I have is my everyday car, its not a long journey, but 30 miles every day, so its needs to problem free and my other problem with the mpg is the stop start nature of my journey, my current car is supposed to return 29mpg in traffic, I get 22, my previous should have got 25mpg, I got 17, so if the 3200 should give me 20, that could be as low as 12... and I can't live with that, I may as well set up a tent in the petrol station!

Nigel (and anybody else who can answer ) - Can I ask what was the big problem with the manual gearbox? On paper I would almost always prefer a manual to an auto, but clearly if there were issues with it then that would force a reconsideration!

snatchy throttle made gearchanges difficult to get right. LOTS of driveline backlash made slow progress very jerky cramped footwell made it difficult to press the clutch without finding either the brake or the footrest as well Don't get me wrong, its still a staggering car - just needs a bit of modification to get it right Somewhere else on the old forum I wrote that it would be a terrible car for £68,000, but would be a bargain at £30,000. Now they're down to <£15k, they are almost as much of a performance bargain as the Coupe. Mine's an Assetto Corsa in red with a manual box

Thanks Nigel, very informative. I've started thinking about possible replacements for the Coupe (not quite yet though, I'm more than happy with my car atm ) and this is definitely an option. Congrats to Stuart btw, a lovely car indeed

AFAIK these issues were addressed on the 2001 cars so the later ones should be better in this respect
