cheers guys, i have never had a warning light, i do feel the engine oil used isnt very good with my recent oil/filter change.
The garage used "inhouse oil"
I asked for a 10/50 but this is debatable im going for a 15/60 millers oil at weekend. Recommended by Balance motor sport.
The pressure is not zero but close. this is over half way temp.

Cold start its maximum.
Just a slight Rev in the engine under 2000rpm sees the oil gauge pressure go above 1.5
Then above 2-2500 its at top of gauge.

JohnS
I would only get rid of the 16vt for an LE. But! once i get some leather after markets even then that would be a long shot smile
Long live the 16vt laugh.

i totally agree with John S on this. Run it until it dies, ten consider your options.

£2-3k for the rebuild (minimum for a good job) can go towards a nice LE and the 20vt engine is a lot more modern.

Have you had your oil pressure tested with an external gauge?

Almost all 16VT's ive seen have shown between 0 - 1 bar at hot idle on the Fiat gauge, but more pressure on an external gauge showing the 'true' reading.

I wouldnt use millers 15w60, go for their 10w60. From my own experience the 15w60 had NO better oil pressure than the 10w60 did.

I'd agree with this, get it tested properly first. mine was wrong, didnt bother fixing the gauge as it just leads to paranoia

If the oil pressure light has come on, then the engine is dead. It only comes on when i think there is zero pressure or a fraction of pressure

20VT I think it's only 8 psi. Oil light should really be "engine graveyard light" laugh

mine on hot idle shows .5 bar

im on 5-40 oil fully synthetic

and 1k rev 1 bar 2k revs 2bar 3k revs 3 bar

this is norm for 16vt's same setup as punto gt oil pressures but on a aftermarket gauge it will show higher as the fiat gauges dont always read true just like the temp gauge that show 70-80 but on the widget 90 degrees

Speak to Guy Croft, expensive but you won't get a better engine at the end of it.

And yes, the gauges aren't so good!

Mine was accurate, I had it checked, I was getting 1.5 at hot idle, but most probably aren't too good, my LE for example bobs all over the place, had it checked and all seems well.

You could save yourself a fortune by getting it checked out first.

I've done these calculations several times and I don't think you can get change from £5k for a 'proper' rebuild (i.e. one which can yield some serious power) and more like £6k including headwork.

If you budget for forged pistons AND rods I've been advised £2500 just on parts, add to that £1000 labour (which is pretty cheap) for the rebuild, and you've already hit £3500.

Now add on another £2000 for ancilliaries (turbo, clutch, fmic) and a remap and that's £5500 gone.

For a lot less you could get a brand new Fiat 20VT engine that you can eat your dinner off....

Not to mention the fact that if you're doing all that you may as well do things like aux pulley protection, new engine mounts blah blah blah...

You can buy a really nice coupe for £5500 ...

yeah the figures seem very high perhaps forged pistons new manifold bigger Turbo fmic etc might be wiser way to spend money?

Sorry I've just realised you have a 16v! D'oh!

The figures I quoted are for a 20VT.

I think you should just buy a 20VT!

Here Here!
I have had a 20vt with a gtec 1 and the 16vt feels a lot quicker. Scary to be honest at times.

I have been toying with the idea of doing a step by step guide on how to build engines, i have more than enough pictures from many different builds to do one but i have none of a Fiat 16vt engine

I was trained by a Cosworth trained F1 engine builder and i would be happy to share some tricks of the trade that i have learnt and what i have been shown

It would take me some time to write though

Ricky

my next years project is to buy a bare block or a 16vt engine and rebuildin my own time there are tools out there and plenty of guides just make sure you dont skip steps

trickymex that would be great as im doing 16vt guides as i do my own car but my rebuild wont be for 12 months and it should hopefully be a 4wd project all being well but i was only partially taught about engines by a mitsubishi raliart mechanic so a full guide would be awesome

the evo engine isnt that different from the 16vt block so you could use a haynes manual for one of those as a guide and fccuk for torques on bolts

What i may do is a generic engine build guide rather than a specifc one

Engines are engines, there are some differencs but normally minor

So if i do a step by step on that and some tricks to get the job done easier that should cover most peoples worries

Conveiniently i have a workshop manual for the 16vt with tourque figures and clearences so that should help

Ricky

Rick sounds all good but if i was starting to build an engine i would just go and buy a book for like £15 tongue
