Are 2-ways okay up front? #872761

I've been offered a set of these cheap:

Infinity Components

I’m not running any rear speakers, they’ve been removed  Up front I have some Infinity Co-axials. Would the components I’ve been offered be a good upgrade? I don’t want to run any amps or subs but would like some bass if possible. Will I get this from these or do I have to get some (expensive) Kappas?

You wont get much bass (if any at all) from those, they are more for clarity on vocals and midbass IIRC, they are good speakers however smile
Why not stick some 6x9's in the rear speaker location for a bit of bass without using subs and amps?

Dan

Third that, not BIG bass with 6x9's, but good enough for most, and i didn't want huge amounts....

Okay thanks, I’ll look for some Infinity 6x9s and find the guide on mounting them to MDF as I believe mounting them to the bodywork sounds poor?

as long as you insulate correctly it should be fine, just don't mount metal to metal, I used roof flashing and felt as recommended by others on here.....

Before you stick a pair of 6X9's in, try "deadening" both doors with either Dynamat or the roof flashing mentioned above.

You may be surprised at how much better the comps sound in deadened doors.

Dont use infinity you will only regret it, i did. Get some vibe comps up front and good quilty 6x9's in the rear and soundproof the front and rear.
Cover the whole door and 1/4 panel not just sections, mount the speakers to a mdf ring and then mount the ring to the door with 8mm anti rattle foam stripping - trust me it will sound outof this world. Doing it this way you can make a poor system sound fantastic.

One other thing why are you so against sub and amps?

My 20vt came with 2 amps and a massive boxed sub which all took up too much room and made the boot unusable for anything else. I know you can mount amps on the back of the rear seats but it's all extra weight and I'm not fussed about feeling the bass or loudness.

Which 6x9s did you go for? Would something like the Alpine spr-694a be worth it 2nd hand for £30, to provide some bass that the front speakers don't produce? They are 2-way coaxials that go down to 35Hz.

I am planning to get some builders flash tape after seeing yours sound-proofing Sean. Looks very worthwhile.

If you can get the alpines for £30 then they are a bargain BUY THEM. I have infinity kappa 6/9's out of my old car I need to fit which sounded the tits and probably the best 6/9's I've heard without being silly money. These alpines are also really good speakers. Also the components you have been offered are a good choice (not quite as good as the kappas but not miles off) Everyone has personal preferences on speakers and prefer certain brands but check the reviews, these are still good speakers. You haven't mentioned what head unit you are running, as after the install quality/sound deadening, this will be the next biggest factor. Personally even though you are against amps, a small 4 channel amp against the back seat will make a big difference to the sound quality versus a small difference in weight and very small difference in boot space...

I have an Alpine CDE-9880R headunit (cost me £62!) which sounds a lot better than the Pioneer that came with the car.

I will probably get the Alpine 6x9s then. I know people on here generally recommend the Infinity, Vibe and JBL speakers but I'm sure I won't notice a massive difference.

Well they are better than than the JBL and Vibe speakers, I promise you (better clarity, better separation of sound). They aren't quite as clear as the infinity kappa 6/9's (mainly as the kappas have their own x-over) but they are more bassy, which from what you've said will be fine...

As for the headunit, alpine are still the best, fact. The signal to noise ratio has always been higher on even the entry level alpines than pretty much every other makes top headunits...

Alpine head units are the best (fact), are you making this up or can you back it up. Every thread I have read about (on knowledgeable forums) have pointed towards the Pioneer...and that's why I got one.

Shifty, there are more threads on Alpine headunits being generally the best. When I was more into my ICE, and I mean really into doing installs, I used to spend a lot more time looking at the reviews and also the ratings. For about 4 years, the base model alpine had a better sound quality (signal to noise ratio) than the best headunits made by pioneer, sony, panasonic, rockford fosgate, jvc etc, that's something that can be backed up by the manufacturers stats... There may not be as much of a difference between manufacturers these days, but imho alpine are still the best. Ask Adam Raynor off talk audio and he still rates alpine...
They are also the only make of head units the people I know who are into sq competions use, and also the only ones my friends in the industry who sell them really rate.
I'm sure the pioneer you've bought is fine as they are also highly rated, I'm not saying anything derrogatory towards them because they produce good kit, ok?

my response read terribly, it certainly was not a challenge...I brought a high end ref head unit from Pioneer and took ages before buying. There's needs to be one place that rates them so normal folk can make a decision with all the facts.

pioneer and alpine are both closly matched units when comparing like for like but i personally prefer pioneer.
Forget reading reviews and ratings the best way to find what sounds best with the type of music you listen to is go to an audio outlet and take your own cd's with you.
At the end of the day it doesnt matter what you buy or what it costs it all comes down to the way its installed.

True, a grands worth of badly installed kit sounds worse than £250 of kit installed well... From 12 years of doing installs I've always preferred Alpine and have heard many headunits of all makes (my old sony preout only headunit was the ony non alpine headunit I liked). I'd never buy a new sony or JVC one for example (however flashy they may look).

The speakers, particulary the sub size and type of enclosure are the things to match to your music type, with headunits I've always gone for 3 pre outs and the cleanest possible source sound.

Back on topic, Daniel now has the speakers sorted, just needs the install sorted and he'll be happy...

For comparison maybe someone may want to start a what ice setup do you have in your car thread to give a subjective view?
