Ok i'm Removing the Centre Console to refurb, i've got that out but i'm a little bit stuck on removing the front ashtray and the little bit of ashtray surround out aswell.

I've undone the two little screws ether side at the top of the ashtray surround from the inside but i can't find any more fixings, should the whole lot just pull out now,as it does'nt seem to want to or am i missing something?

cheers JG

Does the ashtray not come out with the console? I'm sure there is a few different 'how to's' on center console removal there must be something in there. Look forward to seeing it finished!

2 screws from behind (lay down on the floor with a torch!) the centre console and 1 centre screw from inside the tunnel (press the gearstick boot frame down/off).

Ok, thanks for all your reply's and help.

Managed to get ashtray and surround out and now i have gone a bit further
and took the hand brake console out aswell.

What a pig of a job to degunk all this rubber crap off these items
especially the hand brake console.

Now for repainting, i decided to spray all the consoles in ink black to match the car, off to Halfords with the fiats paint code ink black metallic 820 to get some mixed, got the can of mixed paint £13.99 plus undercoat and clear lacquer.

I must admit and surprised the Halfords ink black metallic looks great,

what do you think? i'll get some more photos up when it's all in the car

They look great.

Any tips on spraying with a rattle can? I'm a bit cack handed but would like to give it a go!

Should be ok with plenty of lacquer on and left to dry hard in warm place.

The rubbery coating on the dash console and ashtry was old and tacky
that came off with soapy water jiff and some of those washing up sponges
with the rough pad under neath and wet-dry,

the center console was a different mater, i had to use a very sharp blade
to scrape most of the rubbery coating off then we-dry and plenty of
elbow grease and time.

Can anyone confirm which screws go in the upper mounting holes of the ashtray - the ones that fix it to the gear console?

I've taken mine out, refurbed them and can't remember which screws went where now. The screws I have left are too small for the holes in the gear console, or do they screw into the little slide on metal clips?

Been a while since I've done this smile

A quick question on this - is the car usable without the centre in (handbrake section).

From what i remember from taking this all out in past .

The little screws (black colour) go in to the ashtray surround from behind , securing it to the gear console .Now i cant remmeber if the ashtray housing is attached at same time or not .

Ashtray housing 2 large headed gold colour screws to the metal frame attached to gear console. Seen with ashtray removed from housing.

And 2 little screws with washers i think for the heater console to ashtray housing seen once ashtray open.

I think its best to assemble the gear surround with ashtray housing and surround out car then place in car .

How does one remove the handbrake shroud? Mine has fearsome looking pop rivets that have been split and splayed out - I presume a factory job? For the moment I cannot see how I'm going to remove the pop rivets, let alone replace them.

Cable ties to replace them. Ive drilled out the rivets on 3 consoles now without issue, definitely the way to go. That and some pliers :-)

I wondered how the ash tray and surround came out, thinking of doing my centre console in scotts green.

Thanks Ollie. So I drill out/dremmel the old pop rivets and replace them with tie wraps pulled jolly tight with some long-nose pliers?

No need for nasty cable ties. Use these for DIY rivets, just push through and fold back, works perfectly cool
