It’s been a while since I’ve seen one of these and, as my car is going in for some work, I thought I’d start one off. I’ve been prepping the car for this tune for about a year now – it’s been maintained ‘money no object’ mechanically and also had a full re-spray with re-furbished standard wheels fitted. There are a few niggly things that need fixing but the only relevant one here is a turbo that currently refuses to boost over 1.1bar… That will be fixed during the engine tune.
I’ve got a big box of parts to go in the boot before taking the old girl over to FC Performance Saturday, so I thought I’d throw it out there for you lot to have a guess at some numbers!
Current spec Garrett GT2860RS 0.86 Wossner Standard Bore Forged Pistons Balanced and Shot Peened Standard Rods Forge DV007 Crankcase Breather NGK 7 Spark Plugs 12v Fuel Pump Supply 'Wiring Mod' V-band adapter Pipecraft SS Cat-back 2.25" (standard bore) exhaust Pipecraft SS De-cat pipe A'PEXi Power Intake Pro Alloy 'tapered' Straight Induction Pro Alloy FMIC Blitz SBC ID-3 spec R EBC (1.0-1.4Bar)
Current output @ 1.4bar (before turbo went a year ago) 342.4bhp @ 6,558rpm 294.9lbs/ft @ 5,378rpm 287.5whp @ 6,379rpm
Proposed spec Hybrid GT28 (0.64 housing and custom compressor wheel) Wossner Forged Pistons Balanced and Shot Peened Standard Rods Synapse Synchronic Diverter Valve Crankcase Breather NGK 8 Spark Plugs 12v Fuel Pump Supply 'Wiring Mod' FC Performance 3” 5 stud turbo-back, twin silencer exhaust system A'PEXi Power Intake (shiny new filter) Pro Alloy 3” Straight Induction Pro Alloy FMIC with custom shortened pipe route FC Performance 3D boost control system Walbro GSS340 255l fuel pump 440cc fuel injectors Big MAF
One point to remember: the car will need to be limited to around 350-360lbs/ft due to the non-forged rods.
So, let’s have some estimated BHP numbers then!

How do you mean, Mark? The new 3" exhaust has no cat but needs two silencers being 3". The neighbours on one side happy as it is! Chaps, if I get only 20bhp from this, I will be very unhappy!! As I understand it, the only difference between a GT28RS and a GT2871 is the compressor wheel though I could be wrong...

I would like to think you could get another 40hp mate. But it may need a bit more boost though! Which is not ideal as you stated. I have the 3 inch full system from Flea including a cat and its not to loud at normal engine revs, but she is very harmonious when at full chat(which is most of the time).

I have the 3 inch full system from Flea including a cat and its not to loud at normal engine revs, but she is very harmonious when at full chat(which is most of the time). Why is more boost not ideal? It was my understanding that pressure was the problem with pistons and torque was the limiting factor with rods. I've got forged pistons so I don't see why I can't increase boost to 1.6bar if it still makes more power. The rods are the weak point, but 350lbs/ft can still yield 400bhp at 6,000rpm. We’ve seen a GT2860RS with the 0.64 housing make 391bhp. Hell, a T28 hybrid made 410bhp 358lbs/ft before! I’m thinking north of 400bhp but I guess we’ll see in a few weeks. The most important thing is that it spools quickly again - I’d like to claw back some of that old GTiR hybrid magic! magooagain, do you have any footage of your coop on which I could hear the exhaust?

More boost equals more torque! So I was told anyway I think torque is what you are more interested in really and you can get loads of that easily by turning up your boost it's more about how drivable it is and how safe! Hope it goes really well for you and make sure you report back as I may be interested in changing the spec on mine slightly down pipe and exhaust wise

I am very interested to see the results. When is this work happening? It's going in this Saturday and I expect to be picking it up two weeks later. Results may come through before though...

The exhaust will make the biggest difference to your power output Trappy

The exhaust will make the biggest difference to your power output Trappy Of that I have no doubt Begbie. From what i've seen, a proper 5 stud 3" system alone can unleash another 10% power throughout the rev band. The current SIP is also a restriction for the GT28RS as it is. Your guess is?

The went in originally for two weeks but has been delayed a few days so I’m now expecting to pick it up on Saturday 13th. The problems I started having with the turbo over a year ago have now been diagnosed. As Flea said: - of the 4 turbo bolts, one was tight, two were loose and one was missing! - the wastegate was cracked; - the penny valve was seating properly; I’ll be on here with the results as soon as I have them!

I'll post the results up as soon as I have them! I don't have them yet It's been delayed another week so it looks like I'll be collecting it on Saturday 20th September instead now. I may get the results before then of course so I'll get them posted up as they come through.

The headline figures are in and stevo is the winner with the closest guess at 390bhp On the basis that SteveO guessed 390 and someone else guessed 285, the actual figure must be above 395 - would be nice if it broke 400, although that's only for bragging rights I imagine with that turbo, its going to be monstrous to drive - good spool-up and a wide power band - exactly what makes for a very quick Coupe The drive home after a mapping session is always an event - the new power and torque is just sooooo addictive...

Yes, it would be nice if it has broken 400bhp I imagine with that turbo, its going to be monstrous to drive - good spool-up and a wide power band - exactly what makes for a very quick Coupe
I certainly hope it will be ‘monstrous’! Nothing on how it drives from Leighton yet, just a ‘highlights’ text – sounds like he’s still up to the elbows in finishing it off. From the figures, he’s definitely made good use of chip managed boost control. It must be a virtually flat torque curve! Very German V8 looking numbers… The drive home after a mapping session is always an event - the new power and torque is just sooooo addictive...
The only experience I have of this was when my hybrid was remapped from 262 to 292 and then again when the GT28RS went on – up to 315bhp. On both of those occasions it felt incredible. This is a much bigger upgrade so I’m certainly looking forward to the drive!
