Let's get all hypothetical for a moment.

Supposing you had a fleet of vehicles for you and the OH, currently sitting at 4 cars and 4 bikes. Amongst that fleet you have:

- an Italian coupe, FWD, decent performance, fantastic condition, you're quite attached to it, but you very rarely get to use it. It's notable amongst it's marque for it's condition, but there are quite a few of them still around on the roads. Questionable as to whether it will ever appreciate in financial value due to classic status, but that's not the key issue here.

- an Australian coupe, RWD, mahoosive grunty engine, it's in good condition, used daily, but although you hadn't realised it, whenever you come to think about selling it, you realise that you're quite attached to this one too. It's rare, with only c. 375 ever having been imported, and still attracts staring, pointing, jaws dropping, etc etc whenever you drive it. Questionable as to whether it will ever appreciate in financial value due to rarity, but that's not the key issue here.

The hypothetical conundrum is that you decide that keeping two coupe-bodied vehicles indefinitely is not necessarily the most sensible option in the world. So, which one do you sell?

I'm fairly sure your going to get a one sided argument from most people...being a coupe forum!

What are you using, head or heart? what motivates the desesion? finance reasons or just having two OTT cars to run?

With out knowing the motive behind it...

Which set of keys do you pick up in the morning to go to work, and which set of keys do you pick up to go for a country side blast in?

I know which set I would pick up thumb

Last edited by samsite999; 23/04/2010 14:42. Reason: just so you know, I think sell 20vt and let some one else actively enjoy it

True, but thought I'd ask anyway!

@Jim - yes, I have, but despite having had it 3 years, every time I think of selling, I think I'd regret it! I sold a very decent bike not so long ago and am regretting that regularly!

Pffft, just sell it, or one of the others, or the wife (sshhh, don't say I said that).

But you are more attached to the coop, and you know it, that would hurt more smile

Mark, look where fuel prices are headed wink

If you regretted selling the Monaro, you could get another good one easily enough.

BUT if you regretted selling the Coupe (and you would), where on earth would you ever find one as good as yours?

You know the correct answer mate, that's why you asked the question on here tongue

MrsC is more than happy for me to keep both, although she did indeed cause the conundrum, by pointing out that the Fiat sits in the garage for about 8 months of the year and that I very rarely use it - it does well under 1000 miles pa - and it got me thinking to the point where I started to wonder whether indeed I might part with the Plus.......

Tricky one all round then!

Hand on heart if it were me, I would sell em both and buy something else, but then I get about as attached to cars as I do a quarter pounder..

Good luck, hope I have helped laugh

Now who's next?

He's in the same boat as Edz really. And there's no way Mark would let that Plus go for the £5-6k it would realistically fetch.

:openscanofworms:

ETA Lovin' the same thread on Pistonheads, guess what they're all saying over there? (clue: FWD = shit)

Right here I come with a slightly different view on it smile

If I'm reading the situation correctly, one of the main reasons you hold your Coupé so dearly is because of the condition it's in, and the low miles - you like the fact that it's one of the best examples of its kind. If you were to sell the Monaro and use the Coupé regularly, you'd rack up more miles and it would, inevitably (as all cars do), end up with a couple of car park scratches, get covered in bird s**t etc. Big question then, is would you still be so attached to your Coupé with higher miles and a.. shall we say.. 'lessened' condition?

I'm actually not sure I see the point of having two similar cars. And no I don't mean similar to look at, similar mechanically etc, because they are a world apart. What I mean is - they are both in-your-face sports Coupés designed 'loosely' to be practical, but primarly for performance and image. Neither are cheap to run. And you can only drive one at a time! I have thought a few times recently about getting a Coupé again to go with my Monaro, but have resisted because I'm really not sure when I'd use it. If I want to go out for a fun blast, as much as I dread to say this on a Coupé forum, I would want to do that in the Monaro. And if I don't want to have a fun blast, ie I'm commuting or driving somewhere for practical purposes, then I'll use my little Fiesta. So when would I use the Coupé, other than to go to FCCUK meets?

And I think you're in a similar situation, the only difference being that you've actually got the Coupé in your garage!

My advice, which will no doubt go against everyone elses, would be to sell the Coupé and replace it with something practical. Use the practical car for commuting and boring stuff, then keep the Monaro for weekends and fun - that way you keep the Monaro mileage down, and keep it feeling special. You also don't have to worry about having a pristine Italian sports car sitting in the garage doing nothing.

I think I would do the same as JimO and sell both, then get a crazier weekend car and a practical daily car. Thats what I am looking at doing next summer.

Conundrum is the right word. No wonder you've kept both for so long (but only used one of them).

IF you can stomach fuel at £2/l one day (and the effect that will have on V8 values) then yes, keep the 'ro. It does it's job better than the Fiat for sure.

But then, I expect there's a lot of £££ tied up in the coupe that will be lost forever if sold.

I suspect it will all come down to whether you can get a price for the coupe that it deserves.

If it were me I'd try and sell the coupe. No I'd keep the coupe, use it, sell the 'ro and guy a Caterham.

intercourse. I don't know what I'd do actually.

When all is said and done, I don't doubt that in 12 months' time I'll still be holding both V5s!

There will be a fleet change soon anyway, as I'm going to change the old Landie for something more useable.

On the last photo I saw it looked as though you were still very much attached to most of the quarter pounders you've eaten.

On the issue of the cars I can't see the value in selling either. Not to break the heart of any current owners, but the Coupé isn't going to appreciate, ever. It's the wrong badge. That's not me being a snob, I love the Coupé, it's the way the world works unfortunately. If it had an Alfa, Jaguar, or Maserati badge it would be worth 2-3 times what it is now. With that in mind selling it doesn't make sense. There just aren't any others as "new" as yours anywhere if you ever wanted to replace it, and while yours may fetch a premium, it won't be worth it for such a unique car.

I love the Monaro and I considered one instead of the M Coupé. If it still gives you that special feeling then be very careful trying to replace it, because it doesn't seem to come along in a car very often, for me at least. Unless you need to get rid of one for financial reasons I just can't see the benefit in getting rid of either.

Good point Mark, you've 2 other cars and 2or3 of the 4 bikes to get rid of before worrying about losing either one of these coupes laugh

I dont agree that it wont appreciate because of it's badge. It wont appreciate because there is enough supply to meet the demand. If there were only 3 left in the world and they were all like Cappos they would be worth quite a lot!

So as not to cloud my reply I just read the first post, obviously this forum will be somewhat biased!

I'd say it depends what you are replacing them with and what reason (is it finanical, or practical, or what?)

Flog the other 2 cars and buy one car to suit the needs?

The coupe is almost not worth selling given its value you'd get considering what it owes you, so many put it into storage? Bring it back out in the future when it is more of a classic. (I think they may well go that way in 10 years). As for the RO, well depends if you cant replace it with something that will provide as much enjoyment.

You've got two cars which draw attention and it's clear you're fond of both. From memory you've been through a lot with the Coupe and as others have pointed out the value of it is below what you have probably put in and it may even have sentimental value.

Sounds like you can afford to run both and have the space etc then keep both!

Imagine you had parked them both near the edge of a cliff but forgot to put on the handbrakes.

As they started rolling towards the edge, which one would you immediately jump into and slam on the brakes?

Flip a coin, heads get rid of the Coupe, tails get rid of the Monaro.

Apparently, as you flip the coin, your heart tells you which way you want it to land. That's your decision (ignore the coin, it's been used in a game of chance, what does it know)

I would think with my heart rather than my head in your situation, but I would say that as I am a long time fan of the Coop and dont care much for the looks of the Vauxhall blush ! laugh

The Monaro is a worthy contender, granted, but when you go out to the garage with a cup of coffee on a Sunday morning, which one is the eye candy that you spend time your time ogling (before getting your hands dirty trying to sort out the problems wobble )?

[Feminine side on] The head can get understand your reasoning but the heart will have to heal! [Feminine side off] laugh

Just my opinion! smile
