Is it worth it? What gains would you get? What bad could it cause? Your views please

Yes - definitely worth it
Gains - a small amount of peak power - maybe 10bhp or so. Almost certainly some bigger gains in the midrange, which will make the car nicer to drive in everyday circumstances. Better throttle response. Almost certainly a better fuel economy, at least for everyday driving.
Disadvantages - more wear - it HAS to be the case that ancilliaries (tyres, brakes etc) will wear faster if you put more power/torque down. However, do it sensibly and the effect will be negligible. Also, the standard maps will have been created to cope with low octane fuel, temperature extremes and high altitude. So, post-map, you may not be able to drive over the Himalayas in winter.
Done properly, its a no-brainer - you'll get the money back very quickly

I'm not so sure sedici, I think Stan and a few others would care to argue that there 20v non vis are a little bit nicer to drive thanks to flea's work....

Chip it!. most factory chips are conservative and im sure flea and others would say you will get more benefits than just power. more mpg more torque, If you can afford then do it. only bad point would be if its under manf warranty, may cause problems if they find out etc.

no problem, if you think shoving a 'chip' into some vauxhall will do anything other then use more fuel with less performance then you are very hopeful. Note the difference between some generic nonesense 'chip' and a a proper remap - unless the 'remap' is extremely good value I'd keep your money in your pocket or get a turbo diesel.
Like I said pointless, why not give it a wash and a polish thet will have the same psuedo effect. Unless its proven (back to back) you can be sure it wont actually do what it says on the tin.
good luck. Oh so you don't have to write another post with a little roll eye chap, increasing fuelling (running rich), well that hurts your economy, will cause bore wash which will reduce lubrication and prob knacker your rings, oh it will also up the HC output so it'll prob fail an MOT. If its not over rich then it'll will probably be lean creating detonatation and slowly chipping away at your pistons or melt them. You can be sure of one thing if the map is not for your very car then it will be rich or lean somewhere, and I'm pretty sure vauxhall did a good job from the factory.
