Is there an alternative unit to the stock SMIC which fits nicely and does a better job?

Is there a way to make an SMIC more efficient?

Please, no answers telling me to get an FMIC as it would do a better job - I know this.

Cheers

It's the location of the SMIC thats the trouble in making it efficient, it's tucked behind the chassis leg so it's almost fully obscured from any flowing air.
Also the air supply to the IC is very limited through the lower air hole in the front bumper.

The standard SMIC is already quite a large unit for it's location. Pace Products made an uprated version which was very slightly larger in depth but no larger in width (it physically wont fit a larger one) but that was made to work in conjunction with a chargecooler.

The only way the Pace would be more efficient would be in the amount of air it flows compared to a standard IC but again, if it's flowing the air through it faster, is the air being cooled as much ?

If air flow is the main issue with the standard unit, is there any decent way to "route" a bit more air into that section of the car (piping from behind one of the bumper ducts? Would doing this inevitably mean water getting in when it rained - would that be a bad thing?

Removal of the standard 'air-feed' ? That will deffo increase the amount of surface area of the intercooler exposed to getting air flow, but I'm not sure it would get enough air to flow to it without the air feed.

Just a thought smile

It's been said in another thread here: i tried this in 2004, with a new bumper design: http://sfk.ibk.se/depa/showfile.php?carpic_no=1973&type=picture

The IC was the Pace SMIC.

Made myself a new bigger duct too, with the chassie beam crossing thru it: http://sfk.ibk.se/depa/showfile.php?carpic_no=836&type=picture

Funnily the inlet temps were higher on mine than on my mates LE with std IC/bumper setup. We ran about same boost.
Feel free to make your own conclusions, but I know the Fiat setup is rather pretty well done.

2009 I put on a ProAlloy-copy FMIC and the temps went from 65deg to 27deg. smile

Wow...that´s difference now! Seems then the OEM is fine enought until the point it´s too thin to ensure sufficient (rapid) cooling for the given air flow. If it wasn´t the PA´s price all that would look nicer smile
