Bought a boost gauge, but when disconnected in the box the needle rests just below zero rather than on zero.
Does this matter or when it's connected will it be fine?

There is no pipe connection on the back. Only an electric plug port. The vac pipe connects to something a little way down which then runs a cable into the back of the gauge.

Electric? Probably needs 12v connected.

That's right jeff. Looks like the mech of the gauge is totally electrical.
So you reckon that when it gets a bit of current to it that the gauge will move to the right place? I guess that with no sensor connected and no power to it the needle could rest anywhere as for all the gauge knows its in outer space or the centre of the sun.
Only thing that concerned me is that the rest point is at 43/44 mins on the clock rather than 'zero' on the gauge, being 45 mins on the clock.

No screws to adjust on the back? Plug it in and see what happens

Don't think so mate. No idea how to plug it in either. This is what I've got other than the vac piping.

Is it a smoked one or visible?
If smoked I would say that the black is earth, the red live and White for illumination. So the red and White can be connected together from your desired switched source.
If it's normal visible/night illumination. Black to earth, red to switched live and White to lights.
If you have a 12v battery/supply you can test this first before going anywhere near the car.
