80 mph - It's illegal but nice #1091953

Having been using the coop for a number of long journeys recently, I do find that 80-85 mph is a really chilled cruising gear in the car (6 - Speed). The engine is smooth and quiet and everything seems very calm with the car for some reason?

Just thought I'd share this.

Oh! Spotted that there is a ploughing competition near Gill Mill on the way home today. Just keeping you all informed

Yes, that is a good cruising speed for a number of Fiat models.

Back in the '70's, before some of you were born, we would cruise our 125 at that speed and still get 30 mpg.

Had my Coupe cruising at that speed last Sunday and, yes, it certainly felt and sounded good.

This is one of the Coupe's problems - its just waaaay to easy to do very illegal speeds without trying very hard

You ought to try keeping a tuned Coupe to speeds where you wouldn't get pulled - its mighty difficult

Yep, I find the best power delivery and sound when it all really comes on song between 100-130 mph. On track days obviously!!

Nah, it's easy to keep to the limit. Just never change out of second gear.

Might be a tad thirsty, though...

Gotta agree, it's like the car 'prefers' to be cruising at a speed faster than 70!

6th gear, 80mph, sitting at around 2800rpm, = one happy coop driving

Got stopped for doing a constant 80-85 in the coop on the motorway and got away with a warning, although I didn't offer any excuse like the car prefers to travel at that speed, that would definetly be a.. redcard

Agree with Nigel, very easy to overtake in 5th and find yourself doing 90 very quickly.

I find it easier to stay at 70-80 with the standard EBV I have now compared to a PRV I had last time. I think the boost comes in easier on part throttle with a PRV. 80MPH on the clocks is only 74mph on my coop according to Sat nav, so I normally stick to it if I'm going anywhere that's a fair whack away (Flea's earlier this month!)

Coopless!

Yes the coupe is truely on song at the speeds you mention, and can pull away and up to silly speeds very quickly.
I will be doing a run back to the UK for the AGM at the end of September, the best bit is the autoroute. Constant 130klm per hour is very nice.

80 per is a comfortable speed in the Vis...Covered over 350 miles yesterday and despite bad weather for the return slowing the average, the car is very comfortable on motorways and A roads...seems to settle into it's pace with everything just relaxed...think the designers may have had something to do with this as the av. speed on the continent is 130k's

My speedo must be reasonably accurate then as I knew I was doing between 80-85 (testing 6th gear smile ) .. cop confirmed that when I got pulled teacher

I'm always impressed how easily the coupe pulls in 5th gear (top gear on my 20v turbo), just takes off

It's funny how the speed varies compared to sat nav. When I had my Coupé the sat nav always read a lower speed than the speedo did, but then again there have been loads of posts on here about how the Coupé speedo over-reads.

The speedo in the Monaro is always bang-on with what's on the sat nav (and it's the same sat nav I used to use in the Coupé), but when I use it in the Fiesta it under-reads slightly again.

As for finding it difficult to stick to certain limits in certain gears, try sticking to national speed limit in a car which does 75mph in first gear laugh

That’s because the Monaro is Australian and the Ozzies aren’t a bunch of Pommie Sheila’s who need to have their speedos overclocked for safety reasons. I think the Australian Government would have to declare Martial Law if the locals found out that the ‘Europeans’ were interfering with their ability to drive at the maximum permitted speed, or in most cases to exceed it laugh

Coming back to Kent from Bristol after some Fleamagik bow it was very hard to persuade the car to remain below 80; she just wanted to FLY even with a slipping clutch thumb . No points yet??!!

Mind you, there were people batting past me in Touregs and Mondeos hurl ; nice to watch them go by and KNOW that they are driving inferior machinery laugh

I can vouch for the ease of cruising well above the speed limit as I'm waiting for my first set of points in 6 years to drop through the letter box frown ........dam mobile speed camera's agghhhhhhhh

Its so tempting to floor it when cruising on the motorway and before you know it your over a ton!

Only thing i hate right now is I forgot how many idiots there are out there who think its there one purpose to tail gate you on the motorway in their Rep mobile whilst I have my two kids in the car, when one push of the loud pedal would leave them..........

Know exactly how you feel grr . Tailgated by ijits driving noisy Corsas, etc. banghead . You just have to keep the warm feeling inside!

Looked in my mirrors the other day and thought a cheeky Boxter was going to overtake me - tried a bit of the loud pedal, but when the reflection got bigger (and bigger) a 911 GT3 went past me as if I was parked ooo . Fair enough! Always knew the mirrors were rubbish hehe

lol, obviously I meant using 5th gear when cruising on the motorway (or 6th if i'm feeling chilled out hippy)

I'm sure Dan will agree, as we were in a convoy from Portsmouth to Brighton for one of the meets, I don't hang about in my standard coop driving

I think the 3rd gear is made of elastic as no matter how slow I'm going the car just starts to go and doesn't stop until I get scared smile

When I've got someone right up the chuff, I can't wait for the next roundabout or excuse to slow right down, drop it into 3rd, floor it and watch as they think there keeping up, then the turbo kicks in and its bye bye......whilst I've got eye's on temp gauges, oil pressure etc as I'm parnoid!

The best thing to do to tail gaters (if your on your own and no kids in the car) is just to go slower and slower and slower, like a red flag to a bull smile

Turning this into a tailgating thread but...
I made a trip up north from London the other weekend and I had one on the on both going and return trips. First was a Volvo estate came up very quick indicating and flashing. The two lanes went into three. Still behind me. I wasn't going slow, eventually let him pass. He took off and did the same to the next car. Whatever it was was very quick.
Return journey Saab estate. Lady driving tailgating and flashing with hand jestures. So I blipped the brake so the light would come on then slowed right down. I was just annoyed. I went side by side with a lorry and stayed along side for a minute. By this time the woman was going beserk! Overtook lorry and pulled over, she blatted past with hands doing all kind if things.
Not great behaviour from me, ok but hate the fact people will drive like that. Especially when you not exactly going slow and there is no where for you to go.
Also, there's some very fast wolves in sheep clothing out there. Are they quick or just driving dangerously?

Surprised this threads not been locked yet! shocked
Best thing to do with tailgaters is either take them on or move over and let them pass.
It's very annoying when cruising at 4k revs when you come upon someone dawdling along! I always give them a little wave if they move over.
