Storing a Coupe for the Winter #1100202

Well the long dark nights are nearly with us and I'm thinking about getting another car to see us through the winter. A car I don't particularly care about.

Probably going to be an old A6 diesel quattro - perfect for muddy mountain bikes, winter motorway mileage with work and hopefully some snowy trips to the ski resorts of Scotland.

So the Coupe is likely to become a summer car and there's a garage round the corner from us for rent pretty cheaply.

Has anyone else on here ever stored a Coupe? Is there anything I will need to prepare before putting it into storage? Are the rubber pipes and hoses likely to perish? Is it best to take it out for a run every couple of weeks? Anything to check for when it comes out of hibernation next spring?

Any pointers gratefully received laugh

I would take it for a long drive every 6 weeks or so, and put it on a trickle charge. It will like being garaged over the winter though so definitely do that

I live in Sweden.
So - I've been having the Coupe in storage every winter.

# wash it
# open the windows 5mm each side for ventilation
# keep it indoors, ventilated
# if on ground; plastic sheet under car against moist
# all extra carpets out
# at least 3kg's pressure in tires, or on axle stands, against flat spots
# WARM engine before shut down against corrision inside engine
# battery off
# fresh oil/filter
# check coolant freeze point
# full tank (minimum condense)
# Enis tree branches indoors, luggage and engine bay. Keeps mice/rats away (it works!)

# At start-up (spring); turn engine without ign. to get the oilpressure build up first.

That´s about it! smile

You'd be surprised how small holes are enough.. (remember open windows) and the engine bay is all open underneath.

All of the above except leave the battery connected & put it on a trickle charge. Having the battery connected protects the body from corrosion.
