What will this actually do and will I benefit, is it a separate part or does all come together

The downpipe is a part of the exhaust system which connects the turbo to the catalytic convertor or the balance part of the exhaust. It's usually a one-piece part, see the pic (3" H&S downpipe with 5-stud turbo outlet): Benefits are better flow for uprated turbos and better spool time (less lag).

You can buy it from H&S for about £350. There is a member who had an issues to fit it , but most members said it's ok to fit.

I've been debating whether to get a 3" downpipe all along and decided against it. From research, speaking to Barbz and looking at cars Flea have mapped, if you run stock internals and don't want to go over around 350bhp, running the normal downpipe will actually give you more torque.
I'm sure there's people that won't agree with this, but that's what I've found so far.

that really depends on the turbo and the amount of power and boost you are going for its not true to say that across the board biggenz..though there is some truth in it if you are running hybrid or smaller ballbearing

I cant comment on specific cars here, but, I always use rolling roads to set cars (racecars) up and bigger is not always best. Ive seen people fit 3" exhausts and lose a noticable amount of torque. I remember an article in Track and Racecar mag where they featured a race BMW (old 2002 I think) and it lost 18bhp with a big exhaust, they fitted a pipe about 2ft long in the middle with a narrower bore and got the power back! Strange but true!! I would say though, that in general, making the car breath better would make better power, and mapped properly, better torque, although often in a diferent part of the rev range.

It's usually combination of many factors.
I would say when off boost with big turbo and turbine housing + bigger downpipe + low engine compression ratio will lead to loss on torque on loe end.
However, the top end will be more powerfull (than with smaller downpipe) with above combo.
Sometimes, you need to sacrifice to get what you need.

A NA car will not benefit from a huge exaust, but a turbo car will. It's just a question of how much!

All I will say is my Blueflame (with enlarged downpipe) gave me 10bhp over a de-cat & stainless after market exhaust.
