Hi guys
Just wondering what the difference is,
Say have a standard 20Vt
Against a 20vt with a hybrid fmic flea remap exhaust filter all the crap, just basic upgrades,
Is it really worth upgrading to get 80 more horses
What is it really like to drive.
Thanks much

Well it's about 40% more power. I can say the difference between standard 220 and my 270-275 is already quite impressive. Also the figures don't do it justice, as it's not just about peak power but there's just a lot of it available throughout the revs.

Standard you'll get 0-62 in around 6.5 seconds. 300 bhp will see you doing around 5.8. And that's a big difference.

In short: it seems like you've not been in a non-standard coop. You'll be quite impressed.

In truth I haven't been in anything more than my coupe, big bore chip and that's it, I smile everytime I start boosting, never had the radio on it sounds so good, got a great engine in it though and going to start modding it to *round 300 , anyone selling a hybrid or something better than standard turb, thanks

Im sure someone was selling a straight fit 62 trim hybrid in the haggling/offers section.
They, with the right supporting mods, are good for 320bhp with fast spool up.

Before I went to flea mine was 190, after it came back 252bhp felt a massive difference, had compression test, remap, service, dyno, felt a huge difference through the rev range and response, well worth doing. Even for peace of mind.

Gtir on mine. Spins up quite okay, really responsive from 3.7 - 4k and good for up to 300 bhp. Really driveable.

If you're going to go the fmic route with new exhaust etc., you may aswell get a stage 3 hybrid turbo or GT series roller bearing.

You'll get around 350bhp, and that's a complete different ball game.

Erm, it means someone paid a visit to Halfords and bought a badge laugh

Abarth have no involvement with the coop I'm afraid...

Hi there. Just to add if you are serious on that extra power. Remember a well sorted suspension set up & decent brakes are a must. Of course tyres as well. I haven't really went down the road of extra horses. I did the suspension & made sure the brakes were good.

Personally this would be first on my list.

I'm an old git & happy with it,most of the time

As a rough guide, 220bhp is fast, 260bhp is very fast, and 300bhp+ is fast as f....... laugh

I had over 300 on my first Coupe but on this one I'm still happy with 260 ish, it costs next to nothing to get it to that where 300+ requires a little more outlay. Might get it mapped and leave it there. (until the turbo dies then it would be rude not to put a slightly bigger one on)

GTiR... if you "just" want 250-260bhp, you can add a good freeflow airfilter (K&N 57i is VERY noisy in that you only hear sucking noises, no engine!!!, so I'd prefer the panel filter), have Flea programme the chip and probably think about a more freeflow exhaust / cat replacement. Cooling is everything on these engines so if you radiator or intercooler is a bit 'worn', consider replacing them. If you want to go to 300 bhp you will definately need a front mount intercooler. A boost controller is not a must but it comes with the possibility to have different boost settings so you can turn it down or up depending on conditions, although it DOES mean you will bypass some of the safety features of the ECU.

how do you chaps get by with less than 300bhp? wink

if I turn my boost controller off completely, it allows base boost only, which is about 320bhp on my car, and it's so sloooow!

OK, its also nice and smooth and the fuel consumption is far better, but its just so tedious that I only ever use it when I have nervous passengers or when its snowing / icy

If you're going to mod it, don't faff around with £50 worth of chip - do it properly wink tongue

That's cause you've got no midrange, it's like an N/A car if you do that. I can enjoy mine without ever really needing to go over 5000rpm, and still overtake things in no space what so ever. I just miss the sound of the Blue Flame exhaust.

A K&N Panel filter which sounds really good, a gtec chip which I want to get mapped over by flea, a PRV to control the boost because the EBV didnt like it, a Forge dump valve and a decat.

zimpara - about the difference between 220hp and 300ishhp.......

you give your car to flea as a smiling virgin, and he hands her back as pamela anderson!! shocked laugh

as the others have said make sure you build from a sound base as the extra power will exagerate any flaws. as a minimum a compression test, make sure she can breath properly, better exhaust, uprated or at least refurbed suspension, uprated brake discs/pads. when you get her back and you feel the force, you'll need to be able to hold her down!!

I agree with Nigel. Do it properly, otherwise you might just end up spending more in the end.

Tuning your engine is expensive - period.

hello and welcome to the forum its good to see you are already thinking of going faster!

....As a rough guide, 220bhp is fast, 260bhp is very fast, and 300bhp+ is fast as f.......

by this reckoning i would like to know what over 600 bhp is matt laugh

also what you will find once mapped is your boost will be increased which gives you a more agressive punchiness particularly in the lower gears if lieghton removes the limiter..(i think he does that ? some of the chips do in first and second )anyway when it comes on boost though when compared with the kick in the pants from a large ball bearing turbo its more of a girly shove but its an improvement over standard..

there is a lot to be said for saving up and doing it once and properly or you may find if you get the bug you are constantly spending..i made the mistake of building a 358 bhp 20vt and loved it ..got used to its performance and then you start to think well what if>>>...many k later i am nearly finnished the one i should have built first!

food for thought!

and who said nigel has no mid range! laugh

I started with light tuning (Gtec chip, FMIC and BF exhaust). Managed 277 HP with standard turbo. In 2007 the turbo started to smoke and I changed it to a new unit from Mitsubishi. Now I have 358 HP and it is crazy. Going from 277 to 358 was a huge step. I don't think I will go over 400 HP. You need to rebuild the engine and get forged internals. Too much money for me.

Don't forget to upgrade suspension and brake pads.

I've said this many, many times over the last few years....

If I had my time again, I wouldn't go as far as I have - I would fit a smaller turbo and go for as much bhp as I could safely get on stock internals

So - we're probably talking around 350bhp and 325lb-ft

However, we're also talking 2,500rpm spoolup (as opposed to the 3,500rpm I currently have) and most critically, you're probably looking at a car that would be 95% as fast as mine when really going for it, equally fast in everyday 'enthusiastic' driving and probably even quicker than mine for <5/10 driving (which is what most of us do, most of the time)

To give you an illustration, I was following Lee in his VIS a couple of weeks ago, and when he floored it, I was in one gear too high, and he left me for dead until the turbo spooled - he probably jumped 100 yards on me

So - don't forget - there's 'powerful' and there's 'fast' and the two aren't always the same thing
