My coupe is in the process of having a front and rear respray just leaving roof and doors for now. I notice how much better Jimbo's smaller front number plate looks, what a simple but great touch. so a question. Does anyone know what the smallest uk front numberplate size you can go to legaly? even though jimbo's size is what i think i will go for oh and where to get one from? thanks

If you only have one number you can get a plate called a small standard which I had on my old porto and looked much better.

I'm sure you can 'trim' a certain amount off the edges as long as you leave enough space around the top, bottom and sides.
There is a legal amount necessary but out side of that you're free to chop it off.

IIRC you need 11mm border around the edge of the letters/numbers, there's info on the DVLA web site as to what is legal and what is not

When I last looked at this it was 10mm border.
I attacked mine with a jigsaw and now doesn't stick up above the bumper or cover the vents below.
Makes a huge difference.

Yes I did heir on the side of caution and left 15mm at both ends without trimming top and bottom. I'm happy with it - clears mostly the cutaway bumper holes - shame they get hidden......

If you have a 5 digit plate then size of plate can be smaller. Letters must be the same size as standard and spacing must be correct eg mine read K3OUP and was illegal, changing it to K3 OUP made it legal.
If you google it there is some info on DVLA site. There is also another thread on this subject. I seem to recall plate must be no narrower than 355mm

In my opinion the front is nice reduced size, but the rear looks stupid, unless your planning on filling that big space in?

Letter size/font and spacing are all standard. Each to their own - I trawled endlessly through the web including all DVLA site to find any reason why it could not be done. Each to their own.

Don't think anyone would have a smaller number plate on the rear surely.

I prefer to see Steel rather than Yellow - down to preference as I said. It would be like buying an LE and fitting non LE wheels

Its a bit different with a private plate to just shrinking a std plate! Doesn't look that bad.

It must be the standard size only and the correct size lettering only It depends on how many characters you have in your registration and if you have any 1’s (they need less width than any other character). So below is a rough guideline, all these sizes assume plain legal font is being printed onto the plate in a road legal format (with central space) and is the minimum size required. No badges or 1's in the registration: 7 character registration = 380mm 6 character registration = 330mm 5 character registration = 280mm The minimum height you should have for these plates is 90mm. From here Previously discussed here Order road legal plates at this size here Actual legislation (BSAU145d)
