So im changing my shocks and springs. Ive purchased new top mount bearings. My question is... do i actually need to replace the metal top mount itself?

Having a look at mine they are a bit corroded (i can sand them and make them nice again) however ive noticed there is rubber inside them... this looks like its seen better days.

What is this for? and how does it work in conjunction with the bearing?

Thanks

Mario

Ideally i want to change them but at £120 quid for both its quite a bit of money... that i dont really have atm frown

Yes yes and yes. Change the top mount, they do wear and it does make a difference. It is also very easy to do if you have the suspension in bits anyway.

I did the full monty (shocks springs, mounts bearings,m wishbones droplinks and bearing) car drives like new.

yes thats what im doing john

I have new wishbones, track rod ends, drop links, springs shocks etc etc...

Alternative Autos sell the top mounts for £170... I brought the bearings from eurocarparts (skf mounts)

Any idea where I can get the top mounts a bit cheaper or will it have to be alternative autos?

cheers guys

How long have they been on the car Mario, if there's excess play in the top mount then replace them but they are a very simple design with not much to go wrong, its rubber bonded inside a metal sandwich.
If you rock the car and you can see the damper top bolt moving quite a lot (it will move a bit anyway) then go for it.

The mounts are a spare set i found. The rubber inside is sandwiched in...

I guess i cant test it off the car so im prob going to have to take the hit frown

Are there any cheaper alternatives?

Got some good top mounts if you need them,
most of the time replacement is overkill.
Any issues with them is very noticeable in driving the car,.
So if it drove ok before and its not broke don't fix it laugh

I got mine from a local motorfactor and when they arrived they were Febi Bilstein which I was pleased with (I get trade discount so they were very cheap). Worth asking your local motorfactor Mario.

If you're replacing the whole suspension, it seems a bit odd to miss the metal part of the top mount since the lot is going to be in pieces anyway.
