Has anyone tried fitting a widget anywhere else other than in the air vent? I'm currently struggling to fit mine in the ashtray and getting very frustrated, it's just fractionally too big. I'm now thinking about other alternatives and would like to leave the vent as a last resort as i'd like to be a bit different (awkward). Any ideas?

I have pondered this too. The best plcae for it IMHO would be in the black covered metal strip in front of the interior light. But its too big, well my mk1 version is

Hadn't thought of that one, great idea, i'll see if the mk4 will squeeze in. The only other place i've thought of, which would require skills beyond my own and reasonable sized balls, is to the right of the dials on the metal dash strip.

Thought about that one too, obscures vision too much.

I was thinking of mounting it in a little plastic box and put on the dashboard under the boost gauge.

you can get all kinds of boxes like that from maplins or ebay, just look for enclosure:

OK I've got a suggestion for you.

How about getting a stereo gauge pod or blanking plate (or a combination of the two) remove the stereo and install the widget and a gauge or two in the stereo space. then fit an amp and wire that to the speakers then either by window mount or vent mount or in the Handbrake console put an MP3 player, maybe a creative zen (with radio) or an Ipod and connect that to the amp.

Just thought I'd throw that in there for you.

I'd put in in the dash strip

Trouble with the dash strip is the mounting depth, although that may not be such an issue with later versions. Mk1 is very deep.

Barnacle did do an option to have it in a box (standalone unit).

The Mk4 version that I have is slim, i'm sure it would fit behind the dash strip.

You could always put it in the passenger air vent, Barnacle has plates for that side too. i say that because I have other stuff mounted to my drivers air vent.

IIRC the passenger side plate is not the same as the drivers side plates he had made for LHD cars.

I've decided to put it in the air vent for now, if i can find a cheap/free dash strip i might give that a go at a later date. Thanks for all the ideas.

I had seen a pic of a coupe once with the widget in the ashtray area. It looked neat.
