An article in our local press over the weekend predicted that the current 500 will also be a future classic along with the new VW Beetle and Mini, but can we wait 20-30 years?

I don't believe for a single second that new beetle will be a classic. It's a disappointing car and it doesn't have any of the original's character. It's a Golf with a different body. And an old, boring and not so reliable Golf at that. The mini is different. That might keep a good following. Although I hated mine, second most unreliable car I ever had - the most unreliable car if you take mileage into account.

That's pushing it. laugh It may be based on the same platform, but that's like saying a Ford Focus 1.6 is actually the same car as a Focus RS500.

I don't think the beetle, mini or 500 will be future classics.

1. Too much of a rip off of the old model.
2. Sold in too high numbers

In the past many cars were not that likely to last much past 100K miles even if they reached it, now with engines and cars being generally more reliable and having a longer lifespan it will take a long time before numbers dwindle.
