Hi.

Standard leads are fine. Fancy expensive ones are just good at taking your money IMO.

For spark plugs I'd recommend NGK BKR7ET. At 300 bhp if you experience mis-fires on boost, then re-gapping them should solve the problem (just had to do that on mine).

300bhp, eh? You been making some upgrades since we last met? wink

I sent you a tx the other day asking you this question lol

I've got the adjustable fpr you told me to get and turned it up on the rolling road, I made a big differance but now I feels like a misfire on boost ( most of the time but not all ) think I might need the bigger injectors

How your motor going?

Or a better fuel pump maybe ?

Magnecore leads are worth the money and last indefinaltly.

Tricky: Gillan already has an uprated fuel pump, the same that I use, and a direct battery feed. More expensive leads such as Magnecor won't solve problems that a healthy set of ordinary leads won't. Leads are leads - despite what the manufacturers tell us!

Gillan: Sorry, I don't think I got your txt, or if I did I don't recall answering it!

A misfire could have several causes - old faulty leads or plugs would be my first thought.

Are you able to post up your dyno sheet showing the AFR?

My motor? Not bad at the moment, thanks. Made a couple of interesting mods back in December:

what pressure are you running?more fuel pressure does NOT always mean more fuel going to the engine!it can have the opposite effect!

That is true, a new set of OE leads will be better than a failing set but performance versions are not just coloured pretty to bling up the engine bay, there are engineered to be better than OE with less leakage and less resistance and be oil and, heat proof and generally last 10 times longer than OE.

I'm not going to try and help diagnose this guys issue over the internet but I'd say the problem is fuel related "after turning up the pressure " prehaps ?

Great chance its a fuelling problem.
Or coils, leads and plugs.

I've had something like this too only on full trotle.
That was a bad fuel pump.

What upgrades did you install to get 300bhp??

Thanks for the posts guys

gs - off the top of my head it's set at about 4bar

Kj - I'll get a pic sent over to you And I'm sure the afr is about 12. Something (means nothing to me lol)

i'm away at the min but I'm sure I've got the figures right

Tricky: It's a common misunderstanding that low resistance in HT leads = good. HT leads are resistive to suppress EM noise. If low resistance were desirable then all ht leads would be made from solid copper, with practically no resistance. Some leads (mostly for classics) are made from copper, but they also have to be fitted with resistors.

In fairness to Megnecore, they actually say this on their own website: "Unlike its competitors, some of whom have chosen to market "low-resistance" imitations of Magnecor Race Wires, Magnecor does not make any claim that their current KV85 Competition (8.5mm) and R-100 Racing (10mm) Race Wires have "low-resistance" conductors, nor do the conductors need "low-resistance" for any practical reason."

The main point I was making is that if there is a problem then automatically going for the expensive thing first isn't likely to be the solution. As already mentioned, there could be several reasons for mis-firing. And, like you said, it may not be HT lead-related at all.

Gillan: Ok, I'll look out for your dyno pic. BTW, If you reckon you're running 300bhp then it's high time time you got back to me to finish remapping your car laugh

4 bar at idle with the vacuum pipe off?thats quite high!
you realise that being a 1:1 fpr for every psi you run the fuel pressure also increases by the same amount?so at 1 bar boost you are running 5 bar fuel pressure and so on....what is your chip/map set up for?this could possibly be a problem for you on boost.

and as for leads,i agree with kj there, ive fitted a brand new set of very expensive leads before, only to rip them off after 10 miles to fit a far superior set of 10 year old factory leads.

Decent leads are a just a small peice of a performance engine package,

Less resistance after 10 years hard use, OE or uprated ? How many people actually have OE fiat / lancia leads ? Not many, I bet most people go to the motor factors and buy pattern leads when it comes to service time, do you think they're up to the standard of OE, I don't think so.

You can quote off a website now but to make a sweeping statement like 'uprated leads are just good at taking your money' is an unjustifyed one.

There may be one or two people on this forum who like arguing and try to dominate threads to boost their own ego, but I'm not one of them, so no need to feel you have to be defensive

Meaning absolutely no offence to you, please re-read all the posts above. There is nothing confrontational in any of them.

The points they are making:

>low resistance in ht leads is not necessary, or desirable

>Good working HT leads are essential - but expensive doesn't necessarily mean better.

>Uprated ht leads won't fix ignition problems just because they're uprated

Finally: Perhaps it's unfair of me to say that ALL uprated leads are guff. Nonetheless, I think it's very true to say that the majority of 'uprated' leads really are just blue

...Unless they're red

:-) Thanks but I don't need to re-read . Neither am I of that type, I just didn't agree with your dismissive first statement. I'm a strong believer that there is technology in everything and things can always be better. Or we'd still have contact breaker points fitted to our cars.

i should explain the leads i re used were Beru leads as fitted by the manufacturer when standard, not pattern ones freom halfords etc,and the uprated ones were supposed to be proper motorsport items,Beru's were far superior, the motorsport ones weren't as well sheided and caused missfire problems.

just clarifying there, not arguing.magnecor etc i would put above the cheap crap ones found in local motor factors.so i agree and disagree at the same time lol
