Has it been running without an undertray?
I ended up getting my rad support powder coated for longevity and I always use stainless fasteners on non critical bits, again to stop rust being an issue later, but those are the rustiest oil pipes I've seen!
Good luck!

Hmmm...seems familiar Dan .....lucky escape I think It was the wheels Jon, and the tidy looking exterior. Not the dogs dinner interior This is the most expensive car I never bought.... £250 cost of travel to and from Swansea £250 show in London compensation for the wife for dragging her halfway across the UK for a complete waste of time. Seeing the photo's of the rust...priceless!

Jason,
I believe this was the car I viewed back in October...it was advertised on PH and after a number of long discussions with the owner about how good the car was...I took the decision to travel from Crawley to buy the car..the plan being to drive it back....
Needless to say I didn't buy the car...not as described has never been so true.....I hope you paid significantly less than it was advertised for...good luck with your project

From memory, I think it was £1500....I didn't expect too much as I was after a rolling restoration.......however when you turn up to buy a car...you at least expect the vendor to be there rather than leaving it with his wife.. ...oh and that the car would at least have legal tyres with a decent amount of pressure...and the battery to have some life....when I eventually managed to get it started, it was chucking large amounts of water out of the exhaust and had very little coolant in the expansion tank. The dash was interesting with the centre console being a lovely sticky mess and the interior smelt of wet dog......apart from that it was ok body wise (shot blasted bonnet excepted - never seen so many stone chips).....and the slam panel...I put my finger through it oh and the rad was leaking .....not quite as described

right. so the parts list to get this badger running again.
all brackets need sanding and metal plating as they are shagged
all belts. changing it to non aircon for ease of working on it. i am tired of removing the aircon pump everytime i work on my coupes.(like my space) should have bought a diesel golf. turbo- 360 bearings radiator-valeo coolants hoses-viper boost hoses- fixed 5 leaks before i gave up(including flexi) lower radiator cross member-primed and good to go front discs-standard discs battery tray- mint 6 speed tray with cable brackets thermostat temp sensor water pump oil cooler pipes- cooler is fine front bumper-only if its a bargain- steel grey please both battery terminals- both are mashed every hose clip i can get to. new horns
every bolt that i have taken out needs replacing wither because i have had to drill them out or use the moly grips on them. it would be horrible to put any of them back in. including earth connections which were a state. rust proofing the engine bay.
lots of other bits. cant get the bumper off to get the slam panel off as the phillips screws are rusted well and trully.

Bumper off today and apart from snapping the lower rad crossmember in half because the bolts are to rusted. All is well.. towers holding both coolers are surprisingly good nick, hopefull next job is engine mounts then get the cambelt changed and scrub that off to do list. Any cleaning tips for scrubbing an engine clean that's had an oil leak?

Hi..I just got rough with the screws with a pair of water pump pliers, and lots of wd40 to wash rust out as bolts were coming out. There's not a bit of shiny paint on this attrocity lol and everything is very water sensitive right now so can't use a pressure washer.

There's not a bit of shiny paint on this attrocity lol and everything is very water sensitive right now so can't use a pressure washer. I use Gunk/Jizor or similar and a variety of stiff brushes. I have a litre bottle of water...the type with a top similar to a washing up liquid bottle....that allows me to direct a restricted jet of water to dilute the cleaner. I wrap any liquid sensitive companents in a plastic freezer bag sealead with a wire twist and cover any area i want to protect with Copious amounts of rags. With a bit of elbow grease...it works pretty well for me... Jon

Get yourself some blue steel, cover bare areas or rusty areas and it will never rust again. Amazing stuff.

spent an hour today just finishing up the corners and sanded down the new lower rad crossmember. then primed and painted it,. cambelt change is happening on tuesday once i get a day off. and then try and get the new turbo and decent cooler pipes picked up so i can swoon over them.

I have a coupe in with me now thats on the original:- Radiator Turbo Thermostat CHOD Clutch Cambelt And is on 135K. I have never seen a cambelt in such poor condition. But who says they arent reliable Other than the clutch slipping, the cambelt shredding, the Chod leaking, the turbo smoking, the thermostat sticking open and the radiator leaking all the above are as good as new Ps did you manage to get the PS pump off?
