just for those few that have asked me questions about this. (sips a cup of tea) basically there is a coolant pipe that runs from the thermostat to the throttle body. and goes through the Tb and then joins the water top tank. this removes the hot water passing through the throttle body.

here is what it looks like.

i got a thermostat to header tank return pipe about 8 inches too long with a straight end on one side.
not the usual bend and both.
I then lost the 2 original pipes (one from the stat to TB and header tank to TB on purpose and also got rid of the black tray on top of the fuel rail.

pushed it onto its thermostat nipple.

then i routed it under the throttle body and under the injector wires across the top of the fuel rail.
looks alot better in my opinion.
that stupid black plastic board clip thing that usually sits on top of the rail is gone,

ps i have only done this for looks and functionality,

and for the rest of you guys, (dons Flame suit) go ahead

the thermostat plugs onto the throttle body then carries on to the return on the header tank.

a load of people have by-passed the throttle body in order to keep intake temps down.

mixed results across the forum... i think it works!
i will be doing it to mine when i get it back!

I dont think it makes much difference under boost really. The throttle body heats up yes, but the speed of the air through the small throttle body is so great that I doubt it has any time to gain any heat from it.

Something I might look into in the future.

also, after the air gets cooled from the FMIC/SMIC it the has to go into the throttle body... if that has hot water 90 degree (ish) the cold air from the FMIC will become warm before it hits the combustion chamber!

TBH, im not even sure why fiat did this... after all, whos has a throttle body freeze on them??

Tom - its simple to do, as long as the engine is not running, you can easily change it with out any spill's!

im going to get a longer bit to change mine over when i do the belts!

Yes, except the area of the TB is round and smooth, while coolers have fins that multiply the area that transmits heat!

In theory, this mod *should* lower the intake temperature; in practice, it's questionable is the difference even measurable!?

On the downside, the water-heating on the TB is there to prevent freezing of the flap in the really cold climates.

Exactly, most cars have this, not only Fiats. They're made to work in the winter as well (tho I don't use it then).

Can I just say, when I used to own another car (won't mention the name for the shame) This was a popular modification, until someone, in the UK may I add, had the throttle body freeze open whilst cruising on the motorway. Take from that what you will, but suffice to say many people undid the mod.

That was on a NA car however and didn't have a turbo heating the air before hand...

Has anyone with a Widget done this modification? It would be really nice to see some before and after results.

Widget/ecu air temp sensor is very slow and IIRC in a huge bit of metal that gradually warms up.

I don't think it is too slow. During summer time you can see the temp go up during stop and then drop when you start to go. I can admit to that it is not superfast.

If we can't measure it and see a difference (before and after) then this mod is totally unnecessary.

wouldnt mean its uneccesary. just means you wouldnt have a clue what it actually does. looks a bit (not so spaghetti junction around the TB now atleast

This is NOT a performance enhancement mod in any way or form. Those suggesting inlet temp drops I would believe you more if you said removing it makes the car lighter so its quicker.

I have no idea either way to be fair, but in my humble opinion i would say it will do absolutely nothing.

The throttle body is bolted to the side of the engine ffs, and Fiat designed it to have COOLANT pass through it, presumably to COOL it.

And, as has been stated, to prevent freezing in cold weather.

Not one for me i'm afraid.
