I was messing around with the old Brembo brake squeal with Mintex pads & I remember someone mentioning that Original Fiat pads have a kind of sponge 'backing' on the pads - well I came across some high-temp sillicon sponge rubber padding at work, left over from a project.

I have a spare set of Mintex pads so I applied this to the back of the pads & fitted them & it has shut them up! 200 miles later & still nothing really. I didn't perform any other work on the calipers at all.

The link to the stuff:

A pic of the pads with the silicon pad backing on before I fitted them:

So now the questions:

Why has this worked?
Is it likely to last?
Any hazards in doing this?

This was just an 'experiment' but I may leave them if there is no issue (I don't tend to cook my Brembos on a regular basis).

I also have some of this stuff left, so if anyone else fancies experimenting, give PM me your address & I will post enough to to back 4 pads.

*note this is not a confirmed 'fix' as such this is just me messing around.

Would be interesting to hear the clued up brake-people's views on this good or bad!

Silent Lights... smile

Resulting in death by traffic lights. This is just me being funny, Sounds promising on a serious note, if not a bit worrying, does that not make the pads rub badly? Cheers mate

It has worked (for now) because the foam material is absorbing the vibration that will eventually lead to the squeal, I have the same on mine but after a long drive and some heat in the pads it will return, oh yes, it will return!

Fair enough, I'll leave it then to see how long it lasts.

I have noticed no difference in the performance of the brakes from high speed down.

I will be going down to Weston Super Mare soon, so I'll see how it goes on a long drive

I have my other pads & everything in the boot to change them back at the roadside if necessary

Again, no difference noticed wink

Anyway I adjust my driving accordingly in direct relation to the road type/condition, traffic volume & weather, believe it or not there are performance car drivers who do this lol

Oh yes, like I said this is just an experiment. I can swap them back anytime
