How can I modify the gear change on my '97 5 speed box to feel more precise? I find the box sloppy and although nicely weighted, its far from slick. The throw is too long so I'm instantly thinking I need a short shift kit, although I don't want to add more weight to the shift if it doesn't make it more precise.

Any ideas?

there is a guide to replacing the bushes on the gear stick assembly, which has a positive effect if they are worn, and there are short shifts available for all gearbox types (and they make a big difference).

Which gear box do you have?
-early 5 speed
-late 5 speed
-6 speed

Also, how old is your gearbox oil?

I've got a 1997 5 speed, so I guess that makes it an early one. The gearbox oil hasn't been changed in the two years I've owned the car.

My current plan so far is an oil change with a short shift kit, but I really want things tightened up. Tell me more about the bushes.

There are small nylon bushes in the gearstick assembly, these obviously wear over time, making the gearstick feel loose and floppy. I cant find the how to unfortunately, but if you remove the gear stick gaitor you will see the assembly, and its linkages, its pretty obvious.

Early gear box short shifts are pretty striaght forward too (when youve got the part)

Short shift How to
