Can any of the West Midlands owners recommend some lovely clear, fun roads please?

I’ve moved to Coventry permanently from South West Wales and I'm genuinely missing driving for fun. Today has been a prime example of sheer boredom. At home in Wales I'd hop in the car and go for a spin daily but I just don’t do it anymore. I’ve found a few driving roads around the Coventry area but truth be told, they're complete crap compared to what I was used to.

I use the Coupe as a daily drive and its boring. I want to have some fun again!

So can anyone recommend some lovely roads close to Coventry?

N.B. Mods, if this thread could be placed in a more suitable sub forum then please feel free to move it.

I drive my coupe through London everyday and I don't find it boring at all.

In fact, if I drive any other car, I find that boring.

I guess it depends what you're used to. I've gone from superb, invloving roads every day of the week to nothing but commuting. I'm not used to it.

It's a road I've wanted to try out. A bit far to go for regular drives though.

One of the nicest roads (although a bit short) is the one I did twice a day for five years - the B4098 between Coventry and Kingsbury.

Slightly spoilt now by pointlessly low speed limits, but the stretch from Fillongley to Kingsbury is a biker's favourite, which should tell you quite a bit about the nature of the road.

Also, the short stretch from Fillongley to Meriden is quite entertaining.

Another nice bit is Furnace End to Atherstone

I use mine everyday - just the sound of the engine (even below 3000 revs) is enough to put a smile on my face smile

The Cat and Fiddle road is great fun.

Not really local, but go to Le Mans next year, there are some awesome roads on the way down, Looong straights and some great twisties, along with some very nice villages to stop for a cafe au lait! Just back from a trip to the Loire region and I picked up a great road from Caen that I found a few years ago, twisty hills, straights, everything cambered just so.... Almost perfect IMHO. driving

Scotland has some good roads too.

Isn't the Foss way supposed to be a good run?

Yeah, ok the coupe isn't boring some of the time, but IMO its a pointless luxury if all I do is warm it up, cruise for 15 minutes, then warm it down and repeat on the way home. I've just been getting a bit fed with the monotony of my commute.

Thanks Nigel, I'll check it out.

Keep any suggestions coming. I don't want to buy a diesel but at this rate, I might as well frown

Thanks X19. I was hoping to go to Le Mans this year but work meant I couldn't. I'm seriously considering setting aside a budget for track days but that's bound to get expensive.

Le Mans budget - PM me if you want details, pointers etc, I go every year and done most routes and crossings.

I am fortunate enough to be able to walk, and unfortunate enough to bus to work, which makes driving the coop more of a pleasure. Its such a nice place to sit in though, I dont think I would get bored as such, but I can see where you are coming from, as T has stated, its not the car, its the roads, imagine a cambered twisty road into work every morning... I used to work out in the peak district, there were days I would leave 30 mins early just to get a few extra roads in, the next job and every other since meant I had to commute to the city center... night and day.

Get a job in the countryside! laugh

Know how you're feeling. I grew up in N.Wales, just spitting distance from the Evo Triangle plus a whole load of other equally good, but also much less well known roads. Had great fun thrashing my old 205 Gti round those bad boys.

It's not quite the same now I'm in Manchester. Sure we're just a stones throw from the Peak District, but it's still quite an effort just to go out for a drive - just for drivings sake. The roads are a lot busier too so it's only really quite late in the evening or very early in the morning that you can get a clear run at anything. That Cat and Fiddle road you talk about is not the same as it used to be. Average speed cameras now along all of the best bits.

Still great to go back to Wales from time to time though. Go surfing down to Pembrokeshire at least once a year and look forward to the 4 hour drive home across mid Wales just as much as the surfing itself.

Scotland is the other place to go for a good drive. Anything West of the A74(M) and you are guaranteed a good time. My personal favorites are the A712 and A713 in Dumfries & Galloway. An absolute stonker of a drive and if you hit it in the evening there will be hardly another vehicle in sight.
