It looks like my turbo is shot. cry

I dont want anything silly... I know, I know... laugh

I want something that wont require uprated anything, spent enough recently, but I am not adverse to a few extra BHP. I am going to go for uprated seals and a 360 bearing, but will I get away with any other upgrades for sensible money without the need for uprated intercoolers etc?

Sorry, but I am not really upto speed when it boils down to the technical stuff with turbos.

You could get a superspool, gtir or cr turbos stage 1 without adding anything else bar a gtec 1 or a remap from flea. You'd need to rolling road your car after fitting a gtec to check the fueling.

So if I uprate the turbo in anyway, it would be advisable to get a remap?

I was planning on a remap at some point next year anyway, so I could just bring that forward a few months! smile

www.poweritalia.com , Stage 1 hybrid (60 trim compressor wheel) inc 360 deg thrust bearing £660.00 fitted . Larger compressor wheel for more flow. Flea has mapped one with this unit at 291 bhp.

Yep - a re-map is a must if you are going bigger on the turbo.

You should really also think about a front mount intercooler, and an uprated fuel pump / wiring mod. This will depend on the boost that you are planning on running as well.

You may also want to budget for a new clutch if your is a bit worn, and a decent exhaust will help with power gains.

If Flea is going to map the car then I would get in touch with him about what turbo to choose - you might be able to get away with the standard intercooler and no more than a bar of boost on a 0.62 / 0.64 trim hybrid, which would see you with around 260-280 bhp.

I very much doubt that this was just with a bolt on turbo, and a stock intercooler running less that 1.3 bar of boost. smile

Agreed, it's unlikely you'd see 291bhp with just an uprated turbo.

Suba makes valid points, if your clutch is original then the extra torque will likely push it over the edge. You can definitely make more power with an uprated exhaust, SIP, air filter and intercooler. However where the standard TB28 runs out of puff at the top end, a 55 or 60 trim hybrid would keep on pulling, even on a standard setup.

If I was going for a turbo now, I'd go for the quick spooling version of the GT28r - can't remember the name of it, but Barbz offers one.

Give him a call and he'll know what your talking about.

However, you will need FMIC and uprated pump and possibly replacement clutch for this.

I have got a new clutch, new motormech cat back exhaust and I have also spent a further fortune on the car over the last few months getting it on the road, everything from belts, rad, silicone hoses, oil cooler, wheel bearing, 4 new tyres, dirveshafts and hubs... the list does go on.

The turbo going is just a final kick in the teeth, 2 decent runs since getting her back is all I have managed before this. I do not want to go daft with the power atm, I just want to get some enjoyment out of the car and keep it reliable...ish.

Whilst I wont skrimp on a cheap refurb, I do want to keep the costs down, so a direct bolt off, bolt on unit plus remap would be the ideal route atm. When my wallet recovers a bit then I might go down a different route but for now, I just want the car back on the road to enjoy the last couple of weeks of summer.

I was thinking of refurbing/exchanging mine with uprated seals and a 360 bearing, but I was wondering if there are any other improvements that would add a bit of power without the additional cost of a FMIC, vband adapters etc.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Sorry if I appear a bit wooley in what I want, I am still building my knowledge of turbos and exactly how they work and what else should be done to the cooling/mapping with each improvement.

If you can fit it yourself go for the cr turbos stage 1 in march this year I was quoted £525 exchange for your turbo, delivered. IIRC they can refurb your standard turbo with uprated seals and bearing for around £350-375 delivered, exchange. Give them a bell, lots of people on here have used them. Either way they are both a direct fit.
