Went to my first track day on Sunday, first ever time at a track in any form in fact smile

Took a while to get any confidence, wheel nuts coming loose didn't help that smile but had some fun towards the end of the day as the track got quieter.

Would have more video of my last go on track but I kept forgetting to stop the video and it over-writes older video frown

The last run was about 6 laps, I'd come in earlier than that before as I was keeping my oil temp below 110 but as it was the last run of the day I let it creep up to 115. Brakes lost their effectiveness by the end of that run though, luckily at an easy place to run off.

I'm assuming it was brake fade as they just didn't pull me up like they were doing before but still obviously had a fair bit of stopping power and I could complete my cool down lap without any drama.

I'd really love to go back in November but I'm at bedford on the 12th, not in my car this time but my body couldn't take two days in a row smile

That first clip was only 2 laps, and where were you going at the end of that second lap crazy

The app on the phone records 9x5 minute segments in a rolling reel (like log rollover), I clipped the video in moviemaker just as I went onto the straight as I was just cruising round to cool off then as I suspect the brakes had over heated. They were great right up until then though, full confidence to brake late from 100+

Sadly the previous laps were lost as I forgot to stop the video so I ended up with half an hour of video in the garage frown I'd been messing with some of the earlier laps and had 'kept' them, which I think just copies them so they don't get overwritten.

I'll try another app (harrys laptimer) next time out which records HD, I didn't bother with it this time as I don't quite understand it and didn't need the distraction smile

Might see if FE allow people to turn up after lunch, it'll be a 5am start for bedford so don't fancy a 6am start on the Sunday too smile

What front brakes were they if you dont mind me asking,
I know the discs were 3g but were the pads carbotech?

Yes Carbotech XP-10s.

I'd have thought they'd be more tolerant tbh but maybe I was on the brakes too long. Just looks like they overheated, after a cool down lap without touching them they were still smoking when I got in the pits smile

Everything on the car worked fantastically though, balance was forgiving enough that even with a rescue brake mid-corner through craners when I stuffed up my line it behaved itself.

Oil has dropped maybe 1mm on the dip stick and is still golden - good stuff considering the temps smile

F**k me, I run carbotechs and 3G discs on my 20vt, and they've never let me down like that at any track day I've done (lots!), I've done near half hour sessions on them. Yes, they smoke for a good 20 minutes afterwards, but they have never stopped working confused

You've got me thinking now, maybe I'll drop it in to John's sometime for a poke and a prod.

I did notice there was a dollop of something dark and oily looking all round the inside of the alloy (a thin line in the middle of the wheel no more than an inch across).

Just assumed it was some road crud that had melted.

edit: noticed some stuff on the disk when putting some air in this morning, pad material I assume. http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/7930/img0073as.jpg

Castrol SRF, only a few weeks old. Pedal feel was normal, just braking effect reduced from high speed.

Told you to watch out for Craner didnt i laugh

Brakes are always difficult as you cant test them on the road and simulate the heat as you would on the track.

I am running the DS2500 ferodo race pads with the same front discs and same fluid as you Dave so will report after i do Donny next month.

Dan- with your driving brakes arent needed laugh laugh laugh

As for the black substance it sounds like a cv boot has gone,this may have caused your brakes on one side to overheat as well mate.

Yes I've got Citreon brake ducts that help for sure, but like Dave I also use castrol srf so everything else is very similar. And whatever John says, I do use the brakes, very hard and very late tongue

So I'd take a closer look Dave, you should have a good performing setup there?!

The ducts sound like a good idea, but reading around the subject I came across 'green fade', basically sudden pad fade on new pads that aren't bedded in.

I did the usual 70-30 and 80-10 stops as advised but the box suggested XP10's and 12's could require a 2nd bedding in where they are driven until they fade. Obviously I couldn't do that on the road.

I guess I did that now smile
