Had these ages and following a recent brake pad change and subsequent starting of squealling I will attempt to install to stop it,

But which way;

or
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g46/abarthroo/b89e31b2.jpg

Gut feel says pic 1

Also when installing - loads of coppergrease between the shim and the pad and between the shim and the caliper piston(s)

Or just "naked" between the pad and shim and grease between the shim and pistons ??

Personally I'd would grease the two gaps both

Suggestions or recommendations ??

pic 1 and grease both sides

but if you think 2 is right, why not go the whole hog and install with lip to the inside, but put the shim between the pad and disc! rolleyes (just kidding, sorry)

Might help, but the shims are cheap and easy to fit so if your taking the pads out to re-grease them you might as well fit the shims while your there.

Rebuilding calipers should cure any brake squeal problems, when the calipers are split, remove the pad guides and clean any corrosion from underneath. This corrosion forces the guides up and makes them bind on the pads and causes the squealing. The shims are are a quick fix (and work most of the time) as rebuilding the calipers can be a right pain.

well I got this trade stuff they use at the garage - Tunap 113 micrologic - slapped a load in on Friday night and took it for a spin - it was a considerable difference - then gradually over the weekend its started to get worse, and yup they were looking quiet shabby (corrosion wise) looks like a rebuild is needed frown

but the paste idea was a good step in the right direction - i'm hoping that usage might resolve the remaining sqweeks

my calipers have a few marks etc so i wa already thinking of sripping and painting them , could restore and service them in one go and hopefully get some of the many noises eliminated

well after reading another thread I think I might well just have to take it for a nice blast in germany up and down the local autbahn..... wink

To Really get some high speed usage out of the pads - it might resolve the noises (please resolve it)
or else its a stripping time arrrrrrgh more time in the garage

Yep, I concur, I have the same set up as James, Shims and Cera-Tec - Pagid black pads and 3G 20 groove discs on the front. I had terrible squeal with just the shims, but after completely cleaning of the previous copper grease off and applying liberal amounts of cera-tec to both sides of the shims where the piston meets the plate I cured the imfamous 20VT sqeal yipee No more hiding at traffic lights & junctions and my hand brake gets some time off wink Use it it's Grrrrreat smile
P.S. I only cleaned the piston faces and the back of the pads and the shims. I had no need to re-build the calipers smile
