Like a bit of sci fi I do, but seem a bit short on the movie front lately. Anyone got any they'd recommend? Old or new in case I've missed them, fire away.

Primer - the only science fiction film that can actually make your brain squirt out of your ears.

Huey Duey and Louie, can't be any fan of sci fi genre who hasn't seen that can there?
Dark Star I always liked, one of JCs best I reckon, yes it's old and dated but "Snap out of it bomb..." still gets a smile everytime.
Andrew, I like the sound of Primer and will seek it out, the first thing that comes to mind after reading the synopsis is 'PI', it just has that feel to it, anywhere near the mark?

Dark City - I like this film a lot Moon - liked that a lot too Never Let Me Go - probably more of a romance, it's a bit of a Margaret Atwood type of story... eXistenZ - excellent David Cronenberg film If you don't mind anime, then Paprika or Ghost In The Shell maybe?

Haven't seen PI, so I can't comment, but Primer is a brilliant film. If you're paying attention and good with time travel plots then you might only have to watch it twice to understand what happens.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind The Matrix The recent Star Trek film? Inception The Thing
I watched Primer the other weekend after someone recommended it on here. Didn't really rate it. Good plot but didn't connect with the characters or like the way it was filmed.

How many times did it take you Andrew? I suspect whatever that figure is, mine will be substantially higher! I watched it 3 times before I was as happy as I could be about what was happening. However, I got complacent the first time I watched it - I knew it was supposed to be hard to follow and I fell into the trap of thinking that the complexity was around how the time-machine worked. Unlike your standard sci-fi time-travelling gizmo the one in Primer can only transport people in time to the point the machine is turned on from the time it's turned off and the person in it has to spend an equal amount of time there to the time they're travelling. So, if the machine is turned on at 9am and then the operator turns it off at 12 noon and gets inside they have to spend 3 hours inside to return to 9am. While this is a bit strange it's not where the complexity of the film lies. My top tip is as soon as anybody mentions the word "failsafe" concentrate really hard

Deja Vu - Yup, seen that one Right, first run through of Primer, having the kids watching the simpsons in the background whilst the wife constantly asked me questions didn't help my concentration. Mind you, neither did falling asleep at one point but I got to the end. Now, I shall have to put some free time aside to watch it again because I must've missed large plot chunks...or, more likely, they missed me. Hmmmnnnn, still thinking about it.

Have you seen Deja Vu starring Denzel Washington? Started watching it, but it seemed familiar like I had previously seen it!

Came across this old thread while searching for something completely unrelated!
District 9. It's very hard to come up with something new in Sci Fi these days but this film managed it. Agree, great film. As a result of this thread went out and got Gattaca - good film
