As of today I am now back in a fiat coupé 20VT as my daily driver. On my way to work this morning I found a patch of ice in the mitsubishi, she came to rest upside down in a field. D= this is a horrable thing if you've ever experianced it, but on the bright side I've jsut got insured on the Coop and she's sititng there waiting ready for me to drive her, with a small amount of blue smoke from the exhaust.

I'm really in need of some advice with what to do, how to cope with all this because I've not had anyhting like this happen before.

I would love to have her brought back here so i can scrap her, but I'm half way through scrapping my original 20VT so there is no space.

What a horable day. =(

Sounds like you had a lucky escape though, we all know how attached we get to our lumps of metal, (btw what model of Mitsubishi was it?), but at least you're safe.

Advice as to what though? Buying back the damaged car? Or help with you mentally getting over the accident?

Advice wise I'm grateful for anything, I don’t claim to know what I'm doing, like most things I make it up as I go along, even dealing with the trauma of rolling into a field after demolishing a hedge sideways.

I don’t really want to say what make it is, it's somewhat controversial on the forums, but here’s a link to its car domain so you can see for yourself.

http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3846141/1997-mitsubishi-fto

I have the old Coop on there too so you can see there’s no favouritism. But the thing that hurts me the most is that I’ve just written off a car of which only 350 were ever made D=

I’m going to drive the Coop to Halfords to get a foot pump, as her tyres are low, I’m nervous in her anyway because she’s not been used much and her brakes are terrible. Now I’m going to be bricking it as she’s a much faster ‘lump of metal’.

I'd suggest taking the day off driving, cars, anything. Shock can be delayed (talking psychological not medical shock here) and you don't know how you'll react. It's the advice I would give at the scene, always have done.

Tomorrow you can start to concentrate on cars and the other things in your life. For today just be happy you walked away and the car did her job of protecting you..... smile

well said stan and exactly what i was going to say. Its not worth jumping straight into another car and having something go wrong in that one.

have the day of give the coupe a checking over and then tomorrow start sorting stuff out

Just got back from the recovery place:

Here are some pictures of th aftermath. the spoiler came off when they righted the car, i'm not sure why or how the steering wheel came off, I'm thinking maybe I should go to the hospital. they recon people suffering from shock can do strange thigns like walk round with knives sticking out their heads.

Thank you for all your kindness though, it's good advice.

the one conselation I have in all this, is the extreme stunt bonus I would have got, had it been a computer game. It's very final, no middle ground, just good bye to mitsy, and hello to coop, who's seems to have stopped smoking! Looks like it was a blown turbo.

Update, Just got back from the hospital, they think I have a minor head injury and have said to expect headachs over the next 24hours, if there's no other symptoms i'll be fine.

Minor head injury? I'd say it's a major one choosing an FTO instead of a Coupé laugh

Glad you're ok though fella, and a real shame about your car - it looked great on the pics frown

Thanks Proccy, yeah, I only had the FTO while I was getting my coop back on the road, so i'm not that brain damaged tongue

But just been outside now shaking down new coop or twopé as she's been named. I was checking to see if anythign was wrong/broken. Tyres wer all low, no screen wash, screen wash motor broken, screen wash tube (under the wiper motor cover) had a hole in it, no antifreeze in the coolant and there's no radio... apart from the radio, I've managed to fix everything!

So I'm back to having a turbo now... thank goodness for my shell rewards card!

A fiat coupé is a fantastic silver lining to all this, and ironically, she's silver!

One of my friends had exactly the same type of accident in his old mk3 cavalier, looks like your mitsy did a better job of protecting you than his cav did for him. Glad you came out of it with no major injuries.

I must admit I'm impressed that one of the 1st things you did was post on the forum so soon afterwards. Head injury, concussion - stuff and nonsense! Max respect.

Whoah!! You did well to get out of that.

What a pity; the FTO looked great in the original pictures. I assume that she is now Category XXX.... just sort the Coupe out and smile again smile

Good luck,
Tim

Yeahm, thanks guys, and cyborg7, I know where to come to when things go wrong, when you need help/advice and when you just need to show how awesome you can be when you fail so dman hard =D

It is a shame about the FTO but it was really old, very high milage too and sadly nothing lasts forever and accidents do happen. Hopefully i'll have more luck with the new fiat, been working on her tonight and it feels good.

I dont know what catogory the car is, I'm lucky enough to not need the insurance on this one, Yes she was fully comp but the mony I'd get back from the car does not outweigh the loss of a full NCB discount! I've even got the money to fix the farmer's hedge!

I will also say this, the Police officer who turned up was the nicest person EVER, he was so understanding. I'm so thankfull for living round here, I think north wales has some of the nicest bobbies in the world!

- yeah - if stan had found you, he would have weld sealed your doors and placed a 'Police aware!' notice with the added inscription..

'should have joined the Coupé Club!' wink

Good to see you're ok - sad to see your car like this but at least you have a great 'Houdini' story to tell in future years shocked

Oh dont worry, my friends pestered me by text all day to go get checked, so i poped into An'E and they gave me a rub down, apart from my neck being ever so slightly sore and a bruse that I can feel on my shoulder I have nothign wrong. I suffered more injuries topping up the fluids in the coop!

Looking at the car I feel like Bruce Willis in Unbreakable.
I have NO idea how the steering wheel came off! some part of my body hit it, because nothing else could have, and tore it clean off!

That might have been the cause of the accident. tongue You did well to get out of that so lightly, and to get news on here so quickly. I often hurt myself just driving the coop so you must be made of stronger stuff than me laugh The FTO did look lovely thought I quite like them and the GTO so frown for the car cool for you

I loved the FTO, but I love the coupé jsut as much, but for compleatly differant reasons, however, today was the first day with coupe as my daily driver. Now, the coupé does not handle corners as well as the FTO, and is a whole lot faster, and has so much turbo lag that driving too and from work in the dark with the pouring rain has been terrofying today!

But what's worse is when I was driving the company car too and from our suppliers today, half hour trip one way... I kept having flashbacks to the accident, remembering so much more as I was driving, very unpleasent.

Turns out today I did a much better job of controlling the car than I thought, seems that I managed a 4 wheel drift round the second corner and planted it in the hedge on the straight!

So It probably wasnt the steering wheel comming off, just driver error. =/

Quite a biggie then really. As others have said you should maybe have had a day off to recover and assess your condition. Did you get yourself out or did emergency services attend? Just thinking they might have taken your steering wheel off confused

The Coupé is a VERY different car to the FTO, although I've had one coupé before after almost 2 years of driving something so rediculasly tight and firm and japanes, coupled with the old Coupé paranoia the beast just FEELS wrong anyway!

but on top of this I'm 99.98% sure she's broken, which is a reasonabl assumption to make.
1/ the front near side side light is intermittant.
2/ she 'throbs' while accelerating as if I'm pumping the throttle when it's actually flat.
3/ the clutch gets compleatly overwhelmed in 2nd gear and bounces of the limiter as she accelerates.
4/ small amounts of blue smoke on start up after she's coold down for a long run where she got hot.

And that's jsut what I've got to keep me busy over christmas! I've got a list that long again that I had to fix jsut to make the car road legal the evening of the crash, but it's amazingly handy having two Identical cars to work with though. I can recomend to any wannabe coupé owner to get two the same and keep the second one jsut for spares. So far swapped over about 15 mechanical parts (including turbo charger) and 8 body panels!
