Hey guys n' galls,
Just investigating the idea of changing the colour of lthe coupés dash board from orange to red by way of LED replacement bulbs.

My thinking is that the red light will pass through the orange filters in the dash. But I need to know what kind of LEDs to order so I can test it.

The back of the dial cluster looks like these 509T types:

and that the bulbs in the centre console are these 286 types fitting:

Does anyone know for sure or have they themselves done it?

Thank you.

LEDs will be crap and will not dim. Pink gel may help the dials go red but red will just reduce the light output.

and post moved to relevant section wink

Tried and failed with LEDs. Really not worth the hassle, the position of the bulbs does not correspond with the dial position and illumination relies on the whole of the cluster being evenly lit from behind. LEDs just don't spread light evenly enough to light up the dials.

Hmm... I didnt think about the dimmer... pprobably because I've never used it. However, I'd assume that it was jsut a variable resistor? I'll Have a look at modifying it because LEDs will dim, jsut over a very tiny voltage range.

Also, as for the "even pooling of light" you need to rub them down with a fine emery cloth. I'll give them a go, if they're rubish I'll change them back.

Thanks for moving the thread! I'm still suffering the effects of christmas tongue

Just got the dimmer switch from the old coupé and with the aid of an old ATX power supply, powered it and fed it to one of those 509 LEDs (I had some left over from an old project) believe it or not, but they dim! the 286 type ones dont but the others do, I couldnt believe it... Ordered the lights and hopefully they'll come Thursday and I'll be able to fit them, I will update you guys with the results.
