There will always be people interested in buying a Coupe. There are the ones that have one now and need another one for different reasons, like their old one is terminal, going upmarket or even changing colour. They make a good track car. You even have people like me that had not had one for nearly 10 years. Always missed, had to have another one.
If they cost more than they do now I would have still bought one. Most people that have one now have paid more than the present values. If not for the one they have now then for a previous model. The more that get scrapped the less there is available for anyone who wants one. Give it a few more years at the rate they are being scrapped there will not be enough to go around at cheap rates. Values of cars and parts will go up. Even sheds will have a value.
I see this as being the best time of Coupe ownership. Cheap to buy and cheap to repair. If you don't have to sell then don't. If you have a 16v or plus/le then even more reason not to. The ones left are now in the hundreds. It will not be long before there are more buyers than sellers. It was the same as with earlier mentioned Cossies. Cheap as chips for a bit. Worth more in parts for a bit, so lots got scrapped. Now I would put them as over valued, although the owners see it differently. If you want one you have to find one for sale first, then you have to pay the price.

Nice post Alan. I think that the anonymity of Coupes actually keeps the prices low - none of my friends had a clue what car I had bought 2 years ago, none had ever seen one before and all are astounded when I take them for a spin. There are just so few about - I probably see one on the road every fortnight at best, and have not seen one out and about this year. They are probably too rare to be seen as expensive - I see Ferraris, Bentleys and Porsches round here on a daily basis, and even see Maseratis every few days. This is mid-Kent by the way, and not West London ! Happy with my two, and would add to the fleet if funds permitted....

Cossies have slowly come down in price though more so for escort , theres a few for sale now under 13k. RS500 still sell for crazy money.
I would like the prices to rise but tbh i dont care as im not selling and not intending to. I have a big to do list and even once done for me price is not for sale.
Plenty of nice enough or savable coupes have been scrapped over the years , due to owner making more from breaking then selling as whole. So is it really case of the best still out there.
One reason i still have my old one on drive sorn , it needs engine and other stuff . but shell is fine and cant bring my self to scrap it .
Another big factor i believe will be parts being available. Although this doesnt seem to effect the Delta . I know joe has had items made and uprated and has vast stock of spares, a unit looking like world of leather too. But it takes people like this and the forum to come together to keep parts available.
Out of interest what sort of price do or would people like the coupe to acheive?

Tricky one Phil. We all know that the current prices do not reflect the utter joy of going out in the morning, seeing the dew/frost gleaming on the paintwork, firing up the five-pot (four-pot for some), waiting for the rear-end smoking to stop, engaging gear and finding out your handbrake is stuck! Seriously though, it does seem a shame to see perfectly nice Coupes that cannot attain the same price as a whole host of mundane metal that I would not be seen dead in. My definition of a reasonable price would be the following; IT IS BETTER FINANCIALLY TO REPAIR THAN BREAK A bit vague, but a good starting point for discussion!

Im with you on that one Tim Or to sell then break.
I think one problem though for people who dont or have no idea about coupe, is the badge being Fiat. Maybe if it was a Arbarth it would make it more special/worse to these people.
But i know people who same idea involes a car that would make some of us cringe. But if we all liked and drove a coupe would that be good? who knows . I like the look of coupe and fact its so different to most cars out there.
Even some of the police dont know what it is and have been told by officer its a alfa, i tried to correct him but he was having none of it . I even showed him the Fiat badges!!!!

I know that if I broke my Scottie I would get seriously more than I could possibly get for her in one piece. Just a crying shame Not on the cards though; just about to pay for JBT's vacation in the next fortnight !

Good readable thread this but I'm not so sure the future is bright for sellers of decent cars. You'll see threads like this across all forums, with loyal owners hoping/thinking values for good ones will rise in the future. Sadly I think as fuel goes up and people have less disposable income, anyone hoping for a decent price for a decent car will be disappointed. Choice is also to blame. I'm sure plenty on here will be thinking of what their next car will be - just waiting for the value to drop so it becomes affordable in two/five/10 years. How many people will be looking for 20-year-old Coupes? I know there'll always be a nostalgic Coupe buyer around (I'm still a fan of em btw ;)) but there are a lot of different models out there to tempt. Again I've seen threads where people have lined up their next car when the price becomes affordable. Five or so years ago there were people on here lining up RX8s when they dropped . Not a good example maybe but what I'm getting at is there's a lot of choice and value in the second hand market. This isn't a pop at the Coop but I honestly can't see many people picking one in a few years time - and before I get a flaming I think it'll be a similar story with my own motor (most of the ones fetching good money are being bought by foreign owners currently) and many others. The bottom line is I think petrolheads themselves will get rarer...

I once got pulled in my 1st Coupe. The copper wouldn't believe me when I said it was a fiat Then he said "Fiat Coupe what?" I agree with Tim. Don't want her to be worth a fortune, just worth more whole than for spares. Also, the more they are worth the more insurance will cost. I bought her because I wanted her, not because her value can go up. Not many cars put a smile on my face. She is such a good looking girl What more could I want?

Who would have thought the original Fiat 500 prices would rise? I can see prices rising in the future as most classic cars do.

Keep it as a rusting driveway ornament to annoy the neighbours. If I thought this would annoy my neighbours, I would buy a cheap tatty Coupe just to put on the driveway!

I think the man problem is, with the age of the car.. if something goes wrong.. to all but enthusiasts like you guys.. the cars dead. Because of this, they don't hold much value, the common perception is Fiat's are built badly, and given its age and having a turbo.. its only a matter of time before it goes "pop" Thats why I got mine for free off my uncle! He had loved it for 12 years, but was handed a MOT bill of £800.. he decided to move on. I gladly paid the MOT and now can't bare to change to a different car... an in about a month's time it will make another trip.. all the way from Yorkshire to Brighton.. its done it about 10 times in the last 2 years

Ah yes the 500 such a cool car. Not sure when there value went up to what it is now, compared to what they cost over the years. But are we going to have to wait till coupe is 40 years old ? In that case yes very few left and will go for good money.

IT IS BETTER FINANCIALLY TO REPAIR THAN BREAK Spot on Tim. Would be far more the ideal for a complete running coupe to be worth more than the sum of its parts. BUT, seeing through the nostalgic hazy mists, I also happen to agree with Roly, sadly, not just for lovers of our cars, but also for others.

The simple fact they are so cheap these days is a real turn of for me, You cant feel 'that' special when the marque is just fetching nowt in the used car market. IF they ever claw back some value people will then be interested in keeping them, Put it against other modern classics.. They just dont compare. Sapphire Cosworths £5k+ Intergra Type R £3k+ Escort RS £3k+ Crx Vtec £3k+ Delta Integrale £6k+ Coupe 20vt £700+ MAybe one day they will be sought after, Presently not, As C2D said, Plus, LE, and vt(6) all going sub £2k. Sad and desperate times for coupe owners IMO.

The bottom line is I think petrolheads themselves will get rarer... I find it amazing that what you say is already coming true in countries like Switzerland, where use of the car seems to be declining. I guess it might be cheaper to travel on public transport over there, or maybe they're being priced off the road.

Sad and desperate times for coupe owners IMO. What do you own a certain type of car for? To feel special because it is worth a fair bit? It looks good and you get admiring looks? It runs great? Cheap to keep on the road considering the performance? All of these other than the first one for me, although there is more than that to me. I don't care how much she is worth. Worth only comes into it when it is time to sell. When the time eventually comes to sell the odds are I will buy another. So realistically it don't matter to me if the value goes up or not. It is not just the value of the Coupe that has done badly. Any car not fuel efficient or a high insurance group has suffered lately. The Coupe is now a modern classic. Soon will be a classic. It is more of a second car than a daily runner. A lot of people can't afford a second car to have fun in at the moment. This helps to keep the value down for those of us that don't care. Even for the ones that do care about driving a car only worth 1k or a bit more, most people don't know what kind of car it is, so don't have a clue about it's value

My 20vt is up for sale at the moment and i've been looking at possible replacements for <£1.5k as my daily driver for my commute to work.
I've owned coupes for around 6 years and until now haven't really appreciated how much car you get for your money! I've sat in a few different cars and been left thinking "is this it?" They all seem so boring and simple compared to a coupe.
But then I suppose that's where the savings in mainatence come from.
If I didn't have to start saving £20k for a house deposit there's no way i'd be getting rid of my coupe! Or even if I had a garage i'd keep the coupe in there as a toy, rather than be forced to sell it for less than my last garage bill was!

2 Have sold for high prices lately from what i know, Ok not for as high as price as that one.
One being Mavrics coupe although i dont know the price it sold for . But it was case of right buyer right seller at time.
The other was Moon plus as disscused on here . At time lots of people saying it was over priced or along those lines.
Ok so if you want prices to rise stick them up for sale at high prices, Controll the market so to speak and dont drop price at all if it dosent sale in time frame you want it too sell. Not ideal for every one but if a big forum joint effort made for those who what prices up , they may acheive this
I sold a coupe cheap but need lots spent on it , So maybe i should of tried for 2k+. but at time had people tell me its not worth anything and they got to spend on it. My reply was what you spend on it is upto your self .
