I saw a question in auto car weekly that I didn't fully understand but seemed to imply that someone with 6 years NCB they built up with one broker then switched broker to classic car insurance in the final year, but then sold the car for another newer car. When they then tried to insure the new car with a regular broker, This broker wouldn't recognise the NCB as it had been over 12months. Seems utterly bizzare let alone unfair. The answer in the mag was go speak to them again or shop around more. Has anyone come across this before? I'm thinking of going with classic car insurance come renewal next month but don't want to jeopardise 9yr NCB that I've built up if I can help it. Plus don't need the subsequent grief so would avoid this if it's a potential downside. Thanks.

As far as i'm aware you get two years before the no claims bonus expires. When I got a quote from Neil Willies I had the option to forward it them to keep on recored over the duration of the policy, although you won't gain any extra years as such, the bonus you already have will not expire. This was important for me as I also had 9 years!

Classic car policies do not normally accrue NCB. Any NCB not used against a policy does usually expire - it will depend on the insurer after how long.

No Claims Bonus is valid for 2 years after expiry of the policy.
Some Classic policies are NCB rated and others are 'flat rated'.
If you buy a flat rated policy and then move the following year your insurer / broker will give you a letter confirming that you were claim free during that period. This can then be used as NCB for the new policy. I believe some insurers allow NCB up to 3 years old.

The Classic/Future Classic Car Policies we arrange are flat rated and therefore you do not need no claims bonus to take them out, but,you can use no claims bonus against it if you want to keep your no claims bonus 'alive'. In the same way you do not actually 'earn' any no claims bonus with a classic car policy. Any useage of no claims bonus against a classic car policy does not affect the policy or premium in any way.

The no claims bonus can be applied to the policy at any time, so you can keep hold of it until you get near to the expiry time and then put it against it if you want as long as it is still within the 2 year period.

Although, if you take out a classic car policy with us then upon cancellation the insurers will confirm the following:-

1. If you have used your no claims bonus against it, to keep it alive then the insurers will confirm in writing, if requested, how many years you have held this policy with them, the no claims bonus you provided them with at the start of the policy and whether any claims have been made, which you can then use for your new insurer as evidence of no claims bonus.

2. If you have not used any no claims bonus against the policy but have held the policy for at least 1 year then the insurers will confirm in writing, if requested, how many years you have held this policy with them, which you can then use for your new insurer as evidence of no claims bonus.

Evidence of no claims bonus is basically confirmation in writing from one insurer to another to state how long you have had an insurance policy in your name for or your driving experience under a policy. This can be in the form of a letter or the previous renewal notice or similar. Just like we can get most insurers to allow you a no claims bonus discount if you have previously driven a company car and you have since lost this useage, insurers usually accept a letter stating how long you have driven the company car claim free, so again you ahev not actually earnt the no claims bonus yourself but it is a way of confirming your driving experience.

Please be aware we do also have a policy available that is not a classic car policy and therefore you can use your no claims bonus against in the usual way and can even protect it if you want, although this is not the most common policy we arrange as in the majority of cases it is not the most competitive and when you can take out a policy without using your no claims bonus for less money then usually people prefer to just keep hold of their no claims bonus seperately for use on another car or until such time that they need to worry about the possibilities of it expiring.

Hope this helps

Regards
Sarah
