I think it would cause rubbing on full lock, or in compression if your car is lowered.
Std 20vt rim/tyre combo is
205/50r16 - overall diameter 611mm,
225/45r16 - 609mm
so 235/45r17 - 643mm, or +5% over the stock size
I have 215/45r17 (625mm, +2,6%) and it scrubs gently on full lock.
On the other hand, some 16vT came with 205/55r16 (631mm) and don't think anybody had problems (on a 16vT)... must be slightly different suspension geometry...

I've got 225/45x17 and I find on full lock turning left they rub, and sometimes there would be some obvious rubbing npise even when driving in a straight line, but couldn't even see any signs of rubbing on the tyres. The slats in the front part of the wheel arch liners both side have some small signs of wear, however my car is lowered a bit (on FK's) and that might make a difference.
The 225/45x17's are 3.7% larger diameter but one advantage is that the speedo error is much reduced (eg: 70mph by sat nav = 72 on speedo instead of 75 with OE size)
I had 215/45x17 on these wheels before (on standard springs/shocks) and had no problems. 235's are also wider of course and I would say that they would be a step too far, stick with 215/45 or 225/45 as a max.
In fact 225/40x17 are almost the same outer diameter as OE, and in theory 235/40x17 would be OK but you may need spacers.

Dave, I know this is an old thread but I've been busy with the search all morning and your scenario is the closest to mine that I can find. I have just fitted a set of wheels which have some rather wide tyres on them. (245/35/17) Although I cannot hear any rubbing at slow speeds, driving in a straight line from 30 ish upward, I can definitely hear some kind of rubbing noise. At 1st I thought it may be the stupidly low profile giving me some road noise, but after driving to work this morning, i'm convinced it is rubbing. I have had a look at the tyres and like you, cannot see any obvious signs of rubbing.... Did you ever get to the bottom of what was causing yours? It's worth pointing out that I have standard suspension! Thanks.

I had 235/40-17 once and they were slightly too large. -45- is a lot bigger...

Most common should be rear arches.. But once you turn its the front inner liners!
