Great news, Its coming back !

Shame I dont have a council house. So I wont be able to receive (up to) a £75,000 discount (bribe ?) from the government. Which is disappointing.

Can anyone else think of any other policies from the 80's that could be introduced ?

How can they afford to bring that back? Maybe give the pikies a 5-10% discount, but no more.

I think we were all a lot happier when we could turn on our tellys of an evening and see cheering pictures of coppers laying into striking miners. I say bring that back.

It would be cheap as well, as we've only got 8 coal miners left we shouldn't need more than 400-500 coppers.

Also, is it too late for Ronald Reagan to run for president in November - he was always good for a laugh.

Dear monos, a secret truth.

A silly silly idea thats lead to a massive shortage of suitable cheep social housing for people who need it most, if you ask me (which you didnt) then there should be a limit to the amount you can earn and still reside in social housing. If you go above that you move in to private rental or buy.

Y'know, I thought that was a bloody stupid idea the last time it was done, and I *still* think it's a bloody stupid idea.

I'm all for supporting those who cannot help themselves, but a council house is a *loan*, not a gift.

Most council house stock is now so run down that it would cost the local authority a small fortune to renovate them. It's far easier to pass on the liability to unsuspecting potential owners, who then release the equity and spend a small fortune on stone cladding and 50" Plasma TVs, thus temporarily helping the economy, right up to the point when interest rates rise and half of the houses are reposessed in a worse state than when the council offloaded them.

Nope - not a fan of RTB either....

So how will this work? My understanding is that council houses aren't owned by the council anymore. I thought they were offloaded to management companies. Certainly are round here.

Not all of them and according to some reports, housing association may also be included. I do begrudge the government giving away assets like this. Particularly when they are not building any new houses to replace them.

Its also amazing that there is no tie in period to stop those who simply want to cash in.

Oh well. Will have to wait for the next election to boot them out.

It's bloody disgusting - a thinly-veiled bribe for votes. I don't see any special problem with RTB, but why the subsidy?

The problem with RTB is its short term gain for long term pain.

The guv'ment get a boost in the polls and the treasury, as well as the knock-on effect of a sudden increase in 'house proud' chavs stocking up on MDF at B+Q.

It also gives a job to Carol Smiley who in a few years time will be able to host a new season of Changing Rooms.

However, in the long term, there will be another social housing crisis, but it's ok becuase the other party will be in by then and they can just blame the previous guv'ment.

It should be extended to all tenants.

The government should give me £75K to buy the place I am renting.

Jobs a good 'un.

The council still own the houses around here and neighbouring areas, as tenants voted against private companies taking over.

As for some of the comments above, well, not all of us are hardcore chavs with 50" plasmas, etc rolleyes

Yes, I bought mine a few years ago, but for a good reason - my daughter was young and I was worried that if anything was to happen to me, she would be kicked out by the council and lose her 'home', so I bought it so that she'd still have a home to live in or some money from the sale should she be too young to live here on her own.

I'm with you, Steve. Although I currently pay a mortgage I'm sure I could sign the house over to my wife, and then rent it back from her, it time for the government to give me £75k to buy the house back from my wife, so that we can live in it together, without the inconvenience of having to pay rent or a mortgage.

Without those financial burdens we'll have significantly more disposable income to pump into the economeny, thereby ending the recession and making the world happy and smiley again.

Sensible policies for a happier Britain.

Might be worth sending this to Clegg?

right to buy for some folk yes but not for all, for instance those that have stayed in their home for about 20 odd years perhaps deserve the chance to buy their home given the amount of rent they will have paid albeit at a reduced rate

although i would only extend that right to folk who have paid their rent through working and not had it paid through housing benefit, that wouldn't work though in today's pc society

and bring back 80's music, fantastic

For Mrs T it didn't matter. She ordained that those who didn't go out and vote would be counted as 'yes' votes.

Difficult to believe, but she really did try to get away with that.
