Basically the in-laws are moving from deepest darkest Lincolnshire, where they have a lovely cottage, one street from the beach in a small seaside town to daan saaf - so they can be near their one and (so far) only grand-daughter...

Their needs are:

- To be rural
- To be within an hour (ish) drive of Epsom (KT19)
- To not be any further south than Epsom
- To be nice
- To be within a £200k budget
- To preferably be a house with garden

So with that in does anyone have any recommendations on where to get them to look...

We have suggested some close to home areas such as Dorking / Bookham and they have also looked around the Cotswolds.

But does anyone else have any good ideas on locations?

Thanks, as ever, all thumb

Cotswolds? That's still a bit far.

How about the Chilterns or Nowf Daans?

Epsom is by no means London, and if you were within a suitable distance you would now be havign your hair ruffled until you admitted so - how jolly dare you!!

And I think you will find geographically as well as physically it is down south from Lincolnshire, as that is oooopp north!

Cotswolds, jump onto the M4 and within an hour its real ales and thatched roofs, although you may have to utilise the (ish) part of my statement slightly!

200K budget?

After the op to have the Lincolshire 6th finger removed (no offense Mrs O), they're going to be looking at caravan parks!

What could they get around Maidenhead/High Wycombe/Reading for that kind of money? Not much I guess.

My outlaws are in Cheltenham, 1.5 hours away, thats just about right for me thumb

Is there a reason not to be further south? Only to say, they could still be fairly close to the sea if they looked at places around Horsham and Billingshurst etc

Only that my wifes brother lives in Manchester and the remainder of the family are still in Lincs, so they don't want to go too far away from all them... but its aa area that they will probably have to think about.

So so far the advice is:

- To not move
- For me to move
- Or the Chilterns or Nowf Daans

So a big thanks to Enforcer laugh

Chilterns...£200k...errr maybe a flat or a dodgy bit of Wycombe?

Cotswolds, my folks live there, no chance of an hour journey even at the speeds Jim drives wink Would need to be this side of Oxford - Thame? Wallingford? Princes Risborough?

Banstead, Ashtead, Leatherhead, Dorking, Reigate, Redhill ... the cheaper areas thereof

I'd tell them to stay put.

MsFreak's folks have a cottage(ish) place one street from the beach in the New Forest, and its great to get away to, its like having a second home. We go down there loads - here at the moment in fact - and the lil'Freaks always come down and stay during the school holidays.

But the best thing, is we arrive on Friday night and up until we leave, my time is my own without anyone asking anything of me.

...and what happens when the brother-in-law has nippers?

Trouble with where they are its an easy 5+ hour drive, worst was 9 hours and best has been 4.5 hours... so weekends have to be planned well in advance and there is no possibility of a day / flying visit..

Where as the New Forest is within 90 mins drive and a day trip. I have lots of family that way, Ringwood, Mudeford, we used to have a place in Sandbanks, but sold up a few years ago. If I could get the inlaws that way, I would be a happy man smile

The brother is VERY sure he will never have kids, but also never stays in one town for very long anyway, where as we will be in Epsom for the long haul.

Might get more for their money if they looked slightly further up from London - say Leamington Spa area (ie north of the Cotswolds)? Would probably be over an hour, but would be less than 2, and would also have the benefit of being a lot closer to Manchester

House prices round my way (OX26) aren't great. £200k gets you a smallish 3 bedroom house (3rd bedroom would be tiny) or nice 2 bedroom. Banbury houses are apparently 10% cheaper than Bicesters, and the nearer you get to Oxford the more you pay.

1 hour from London down the M40. Village houses are uber expensive.

Im in Swindon. Right on the M4,.having a lot of money invested in it and 200k would get you a massive 4 bed detached in a quiet area with lots of amenities

What about they rent theirs out (good revenue for seaside cottages/houses) and try and rent somewhere they fancy nearer? If it doesn't work out they can move on...just saying, don't shoot the messenger suicide <do'h too late
