I've just bought this on a whim after reminiscing about just how good Goldeneye was. Best game ever? For me it's got to be up there with Doom and Duke Nukem 3D for best FPS. I've also got a SNES and I'll often have a few goes on Mario World. I have a yearning for an Amiga 500/600 but I think the truth is you wait minutes at a time for games to load! Emulators don't really do it for me. They don't have the feel of the original game, on the original pad, on the right console.
What do you go back to? Can you recommend me the best N64 games I should have?

Playstation. Doom and Ultimate Doom. smile Somewhat crappy graphics on a 42" LCD, but still two of my all time faves. I never played it on the PC, my fave PC games would be the Mechwarrior series cool .

The Xbox 360 Arcade has the full, original Doom and Doom II as well as Duke Nukem and they're fantastic! Doom was brilliant on the Playstation. Better than the PC version IMO. The hidden level with a Techno Nightclub was a neat touch smile

Pinin all you've done is show your lack of FPS knowledge tongue

Best FPS? Either,

Half Life
System Shock 2
Unreal
Deus Ex (the original)
Or maybe, Far Cry (the original)

Duke Nukem wouldn't even come close, it was old before it was even released. Made to look sorry for itself by Quake.

Half Life 2 was an absolute cracker, all the others you've listed wouldn't be good enough to clean Duke's shoes tongue

I didn't say half life 2, a good sequel but still not the ground-breaker of the original.

I know you didn't. I just thought HL2 was worthy of being in the top 5. It really moved the game forward. When will HL3 be out I wonder?

They're still supposed to be working on HL2:Episode 3!

The success of Steam and Portal really screwed them over. Completely rearranged their development priorities. frown

Steam was a complete NIGHTMARE wasn't it? really frustrating. You couldn't play the game unless you had access to the internet grr

yeah it was a little ahead of it's time, but its been awesome for the last few years. An online computer game store that stores all your purchases so you can install and uninstall as you please, store all your achievements etc, etc.

but yes for HL1 it was a pain.

I have amased a bit of a retro collection from my trips to Sunday morning car boot sales (sad I know)
I love firing up the snes, n64, nes, master system and playing though some old games. Zelda 3 a link to the past keeps me comming back time and time again although I think I have uncovered every secrete to that game twice over now.

Played games at the moment
Mario cart 64
Mario cart (snes set up for battle mode when brother is over)
Mario all stars for the snes

I have splashed out for a wii classic controller for my I-Pad though as I often load up starfox on the train home smile

I loved my dreamcast aswell.
Shenmue...best game ever for me
Crazy Taxi
Jet set radio
Ready to rumble boxing....afro thunder!

For the pc when i first got the internet there was one game i always played.
Unreal Tournament
Played on 56k dial-up but was brilliant.

Sure theres loads more i cant quite remember.

I've got all the Nintendo consoles (expect the Virtual Boy) so I can comment on Nintendo games you need to own!

NES
Super Mario World
Super Mario World 3
The Legend of Zelda - Links Awakening
Super Spike Volley Ball (4 player compatible with a multitap!)
World Cup (also 4 player!)
Lunar Pool

SNES
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario World 4
Super Probotector
Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past
Secret of Mana
Street Fighter II (Turbo)
Donkey Kong Country
Star Fox

N64
Mario 64
Mario Kart 64
Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time
Legend of Zelda - Majoras Mask
Goldeneye
Perfect Dark (made by Rare as per Goldeneye but with better multiplayer - requires expansion pak)

If you've not heard of, or played it, try Super Probotector, it's a hidden gem of a game. Perfect Dark is also excellent.

Thanks Gunzi, that's some top recommendations there. I'll be getting Mario 64 and Perfect Dark after I'm bored of Goldeneye.

Sorry Matt, needs to be Sega DC for me, Then PSX. The A500 never gets used, as you say it a bit of a ball-ache to put on

Dare I post a pic of my retro setup?

Just 'mega lol'd' at that....

Not sure if it's classed as retro yet,but Final Fantasy 7......for me...the be all and end all of gaming....

Speaking to a 'geeky' gaming friend tonight,if they were to release FF7 on PS3 it would take 30 years to programme/produce the graphics to a suitable level to suit the current platform.....as he said...think 'advent children',now think how much gameplay there is in FF7....... ooo

Not sure about 30 years but by christ there's over a hundred hours gameplay to come near completing the game 100%

Wish they would though laugh

I start the FF series with such high hopes, I watched my brother put hours and hours and hours in to it. I manage to get half way though, then stop, then I cant start again because I have forgot where I am in the story!

Nice Collection mate.
I'm a veteran gamer too

My collection must be Vintage if yours is Retro.

I cant remember alot of the stuff in my attic.

I have;

Loads of Handheld LCD/LED games
Grandstand games console from around 1978.
Sinclair ZX Spectrum
Dragon32 Computer
Atari 2600 (6 switch Wood)Console.
Mattel Intellivision. with voice module and Computer Component and Piano Keyboard Component.

BBC Micro.
Atari 400 Computer with Membrane Keyboard.
Atari 800XL.
Atari ST.
Commodore Amiga
SNES
Sega Megadrive
ATARI Lynx x3
Xbox original.
PSP x2
PS3.
Several Amstrads
Mac Classic x 2
Mac Powerbook.
Power PC
Palm xion
Ipod Touch 4 x2
Ipad 2
Galaxy S"

There is more but I've forgotten and
I wont list the current stuff as its to much.
I've run a Computer business for nearly 20 years now so I have an excuse wink andI was always getting offered stuff by customers.

I play on PC's mostly and have PC's everywhere.
I Sim Race regularly every week and have a Proper Racing seat Logitech G25 & G27 Wheels Pedals etc etc. Probably my main PC Rig is worth more than my coupe. Which seems crazy.

Currently playing BF3 and Skyrim a bit.

Have been playing the Monkey Islands series with the whole family on the PS3 over the winter and also Indiana Jones Fate of Atlantis. Which second time around are still great games and very funny.

And Who remembers M.U.L.E ? one of the best Multiplayer games ever. You can now download it and play it on line with no emulation hassles.
I got lots of computer technophobes( I dont play games rolleyes) ) hooked on that game during the early 1980s.

Go to http://www.planetmule.com/

I'll shut-up before I bore some of you to death. biglaugh

I'm off to practice Spa smile

I know I'm very lucky because Computers are my Biz I have a perfect excuse to "research/invest" in new technology. (boys toys) wink So I dont get too much grief.

I get a lot of stick over car ownership though. frown

I've had:

ZX81
BBC Micro
Atari ST
Commodore Amiga
Acorn Archimedes
SNES
PS1
PS2
Sega Dreamcast
and all manner of PC's from a 286 upwards.

The Atari ST is the only old machine I've still got and use occasionally, although not really for playing games.
