Just gauging interest as I know some of the twinscroll turbos spool really quick. I was thinking something like a td05 16g as I can get my hands on one

You'll need a twin scroll manifold...

As far as I'm aware, it wouldn't work on a 5 Cylinder engine.

Coopless!

I know you can't use twin scroll on a 5 cylinder but what of you just used a normal manifold

You can use twin scroll on a 5 cylinder and it has been done before. However it will not work on the standard manifold as the runners have to be divided.

How would you arrange the cylinders?

There would be no point using a twin scroll turbine housing on an open manifold.

you would lose all the benefit on an open manifold, Strictly speaking I assume you mean divided rather than twinscroll but I won't get caught up on that

A divided (commonly called twinscroll on the www) works by dividing the cylinders as to limit the interference of exhaust gases from one cylinder with another cylinder which is near it is firing sequence, ie a 1,3,4,2 firing order 4 cylinder, you would link 1 and 4 together and 3 and 2. With a 5 cylinder there is no split. if you ran a divided turbo on an open manifold you lose the ability to keep the exhaust gases seperate till the turbine (ie they all get together in the collector so may as well run an open manifold), if you have a divided manifold say on a 16v as above 1&4 and 3&2 to a open turbine housing you lose the benefit as well.

JTM runs a evo TS turbo on his 16vt and tigart make a divided 16vt manifold, on the 20vt it's not a realistic solution

A 6 cylinder is the ideal configuration for divided turbos

Real twinscroll has different volute dimensions on the turbine scroll so as I say 99% of the aftermarket offerings are divided

If you want something special for the 20VT, how about a quin-turbo setup? Some nutter applied the same process to an an EVO, so I don't see why one more mini-turbo would be a problem

Here's a challenge! Make a divided manifold for a five cylinder by splitting one of the cylinders to be exhausted with two pipes, 2.5 cylinders to either side of the divided turbo chinny

A turbo per cylinder wouldn't be much good, there'd be a lot of free-wheeling of the turbine between exhaust cycles. Speeding it up and down would be bad for efficiency. People do some daft things rofl

And if you are really bored and love the challenge, then weld up the splitter area(exhaust side ofcourse). Reface it, port the welds up nicely, and use 5 smaller pipes per divided section. Et voila, twin scroll for the 5 pot smile.

This would only be advantageous for people wanting next to no lag.
Not great for rev duration and after 5k they cause more restrictions hence why very little top end power is made.

So far anyways.

That'd take some making Remco! two collectors with five inlets on each, ten runners all to route round each other and a cylinder head to fight on with too. When will you have it finished wink

A twin scroll turbo isn't really about getting them to spool sooner, at least in my mind, little or no difference between them and a single volute. One (of quite a few increasingly complex benifits) difference I see is in the lack of influence other cylinders are having on the cylinder that is trying to exhaust just after combustion.

Would indeed be quite nice to make, but i am not that bored yet, or would you like to order one smile.

No 5 cyl's for me mate, maybe someone will fancy trying something a bit different though with all the people that like that engine on here....

I doubt that, but who knows. 20vt does just fine without all the hassle.
