Yep... my GT30/82 died yesterday becasue of bad advice and me not listening to my gut feeling Long story short... Oil starvation to the turbo because I fitted a 1mm oil feed reducer Flea was out checking my fuelling when he lost boost but couldn't find any leaks, I got the call and while I was walking back realised what this issue could be which was then confirmed back at Leighton's, no bearings left in the turbo and massive amounts of lateral movement in the shaft, this unit is propper ****ed! What am i going to do about Spa...... more to follow, I'm not finished yet and Leighton bless him has pencilled me in for a possible remap next Wednesday, but if all else fails I'll either be in MrsCC's 2.4 or my Plus. Coupes.... why do we do it ****Addition**** As Rich rightly points out below, this was a journal bearing unit so don't panic if you're running a ball bearing unit with a restrictor, this is correct. Thanks Rich

Just to clarify, after confirmation from Joe, his turbo was a journal bearing turbo, not a roller bearing turbo.
Roller bearing turbos should still have a 1mm restrictor fitted.
(just for piece of mind for anybody with a GT series turbo ie gt28)

Joe please clarify that you fitted a 1mm restrictor to a journal bearing turbo???? Are you aware that restrictors are a recent addition to ball bearing turbos applications only, due to the low oil supply required for operation. Reduced Oil Flow – The ball bearing design reduces the required amount of oil required to provide adequate lubrication. This lower oil volume reduces the chance for seal leakage. Also, the ball bearing is more tolerant of marginal lube conditions, and diminishes the possibility of turbocharger failure on engine shut down. from Garretts website, applies to roller bearing turbos only. Garrett website Journal bearing turbos must not ever be fitted with a restricted oil supply.

If i were you i would contact your supplier again without him knowing the issues just to clarify this and record the conversation. This is negligence on his behalf and i would press for compensation and consider changing suppliers.
The thing that your going to have issues with is the seizure wouldve caused all the fillings to be returned to the sump. The return side is unrestricted and would allow large particles to travel into the sump. This will be floating in the oil and potentially already be circulating around the engine. I would drop the sump and check the big ends and mains.
Dropping the oil will give you a idea as to the extent of the contamination.
But wherever it is ensure its not started.
Bit of a nightmare from the sounds of it.

Bit of a nightmare from the sounds of it. Yes I know how much work is ahead if I'm going to get this Coupe ready for Spa, Oil has already been emptied and yes there's debris. The sump would of come off anyway after a failure like this, oil cooler and pipes will be sent off for cleaning and we'll see what we find with the shells but I've new in stock if needed. After an hours phone call with the supplier they're taking no responsibility with the failure and the restrictor, he's still telling me it's OK and something else must have caused it to fail ( !) Upside is... well there isn't one, looks like I'll have to pay full price for another turbo but it won't be from them that's for sure.

Damn mate not good! Feel free to put me to good use on Saturday, I'll help any way i can! Thanks Mart Happy Birthday btw same as before or something different?
Ninja Yes same Spec Rich as I was slowly developing better spooling rates with the new 3.5 down pipe and exhaust. I very nearly went for a GTX series turbo but I've not had any issues with the 30/82, well until my brain dead actions of fitting a restrictor that is Fitted and mapped in time for Spa? That's the Plan Dan Breakfast on me Wednesday mate? I'll jump for joy after I've driven on the train next Friday Marco, there's a long way to go yet
