Over the past year or so we've been experiencing issues with the OEM oil filters becoming loose and leaking, is this just me or have others found this?

We looked at this at the beginning of last year and found the rubber O'rings aren't seated correctly but even after pushing them in and tightening them more then is needed they're still working loose and leaking.

This morning I ordered in 10 new Bosch filters so I'll see how we get on with these. Normally we only use genuine parts so you'd exspect no issues like this, especially with an oil filter.

Yes, I have had this! I always fitted the longer halfords or Champion filter just to ease replacement, as i change the oil 2-3 times a year. Never had an issue for 5 years.

Then I fitted an OE filter that I got with a service kit from AA. 4 times I have had to tighten the bloody thing, and it has just started dripping again. I am always wary not to overtighten the filter but I still do it faily tight and never had a problem with any other car or the coupe till now. However each time when i check after the oil stats appearing I found the OE filter loose grr

Back to longer non OE filters for me... if I ever do anothe change cry

Ok good it's not just me then.

I like to use OEM parts as much as possible but this issue is a real pain, especially when I get a call from a customer saying their car is leaving oil drips everywhere.

Later today I'm going to cut a Fiat filter in half along with an old Bosch one just to compare.

I've had that too, but I'd just blamed my own ineptitude. Now I have something else to blame! Hurrah!

I've also experienced this, although not having had the car long I'm unsure if it's an OEM filter. I guess it is as it was last serviced with you Joe.

If you've not had a oil change yet Pete then yes this will also be an OEM filter.

Glad you raised this Joe as you saw this on my red one ad my NA. The NA had been serviced previously somewhere else. Who makes the OEM filter

I haven't had any issues with genuine 20vt oil filters. Though I remember when I had a Punto GT Fiat changed the filters. The later ones were poor quality, one had swarf on the threads out of the box.

I started using Fram filters on my Punto after this.

They're being tightened to 14nm with a Fiat Hex filter socket but OEM work loose hence the thread.

I had to tighten mine twice last week after an oil change with an oil filter cup it seemed tight when I first did it obviously not though as there was oil dripping off the bottom engine mount.

Joe, do you have a filter housing in your stock of spares to see if there's a miss match between the threads on the filter and the housing? I can't see why they would be working loose?

I recall this happening to CarlT years ago and he found that the adapter thread (the one that the filter screws on to) had come loose, allowing the filter to appear tight initially but then loosening off as the engine was run. I'm assuming you've checked the tightness of the filter receiver (for want of a better description)?

Ah yes, good memory Stan, I recall that too. The threaded male part was also threaded on the other end to mount it to the housing.

The connection couplings are tight, the issues are the filters coming loose even after being tightened to twice the recommended torque, it's not happening straight away, they come loose a few hundred miles after fitting.

This isn't an isolated issue as it's happened to others who have also used OEM, my concerns are to the quality of the part and the fact that an oil leak no matter how slight is still an oil leak which if not checked leads to low oil pressure and worst still possible engine failure.

More to follow.

Just managed to put a quarter turn by hand on mine again, gripping it with rubbergloves to give extra purchase. Admittedly I only hand tightened it last time, due to not having a cup wrench or similar.

Joe are the sealing faces parallel? Perhaps there are issues with drunken threads? If so thermal energy would drive it loose.

Yep my filter keeps coming loose too Joe! Went under the car last weekend, needed a good half a turn, oil everywhere!

Kinda glad its just the filter and nothing else.

No they don't work loose hence my reply.
14 nm doesn't apply to these.this is where the issue is
If you torque the filters then try them with a ratchet you'll still be able to move it half a turn.
As Crude as it sounds it has to be as tight as possible, the only thing you have to be careful of is that you check the oil filter housing bolt when removing the filters.

And to let you into a secret that almost everyone else knows.Fiat filters arent built by Fiat ,there manufactured by a well known after market supplier

I reckon it could be something as simple as the material from which the O ring seal is made, perhaps this has changed for some reason (cost, typically) and the new stuff is not as grippy maybe?

I've got to agree with JBT on this. I have never torqued an oil filter in the 20 years I've been servicing cars crazy . I always tighten them up as tight as I can by bare hand and then give them a little nip more with some p40 sandpaper or something for a little more grip and I've never had a problem with a filter loosening off.

With my Coupé I've always used either Coopers or Fram oil filters (long and short length) and a cup wrench for slackening off and tightening them. I always check the thread in the housing to see if has slackened off (it's always been fine and never needed tightening) and when fitting the filter I always give it a good nip up with the ratchet and cup wrench, obviously nowhere near straining the threads of the filter but tight enough to satisfy me that it's not going to slacken off.

I remember when I first got my coupe...

The filter was SO tight it was stupid.

It seems we are faced with 2 options.

Over tightened them and not get them off with out a fight

Or

Nip them up and check them

I did another coupe FT tight and it worked loose...

It would seem clear by what you have said previously, which implied that people should tighten them beyond the torque the book reccomends, that your last comment should read..... "tighten them improperly and they won't leak. simples..." .... yes
