The lacquer on the roof of my scotty is cloudy/patchy. When I first got the car I scratched a bit with my fingernail and it began to peel but I managed to catch it early and sealed it with a lacquer touch up pen.
Is there anything that can be done to improve the appearance? I've seen people removing the lacquer on the roof completely but mine isn't peeling yet.

Serg1, it is not a case of peeling laquer. It is that the laquer goes like icing sugar and just crumbles off. It is UV damage that causes this. It start very oddly too. The pain takes on a matt look and you think it just need a polish, but the matt look comes from deep under the clear coat No amount of polising makes any difference.

Well it's stayed the same for about a year, so I think I've been lucky so far (touch wood) that it hasn't actually peeled.
When it starts though, what sort of price should I be looking at for a roof respray (no sunroof)?
Can anyone recommend someone near Basildon?
Is it possible to just re-do the lacquer or will the colour need respraying as well?

If the roof is going then the rest of the car will soon follow. My roof went 18months ago and six months ago the bonnet went and then a couple of monthh ago the rear quartes and boot followed. I suspect it needs a proper rub down then a coat of colour followed by the clearcoat. As the clearcoats must all me removed I don't think you will get away without a colour coat. Cost = £2k min

and how much should I expect to pay for just the roof?
I don't doubt that the rest will go eventually but there isn't so much as a hint of it anywhere else on the body and the bonnet is a replacement that was apparently resprayed last year.
There is no chance of me spending £2000 on a full respray on this car.

I had my roof, bonnet, A & C pillars, front bumper and some scratches down the side of my Coupe resprayed last year. I got quotes ranging from £450 - £950 for that work to be done. At the time I wanted to spend as little as possible, so after a bit of haggling got the cheapest price down to £400. When you're stood next to it and inspect it closely you can see that in a few areas it's not a totally perfect job, but stand 6 feet away and these imperfections disappear. I was over the moon with the results, especially for the price I paid.

You do get what you pay for. I had my Scottie resprayed (bonnet, roof and boot lid) for £500, and she was fine... had a FULL glass-out respray on the Moon VT6 for more than £2K and she is . The Moon is for show and the Scottie for go though..... You'll need to keep the car for a decade to get your money back, so just do/spend what you feel is appropriate for your own piece of mind.

I've just been quoted £250 for the roof - lacquer off, paint on paint and re-lacquered, blended in on the C pillars - which I think is reasonable. I'm not after perfection as the rest of the car isn't perfect. Just presentable. This is never going to be a show car. I also mentioned that it wont be until after the MOT because I want to make sure funds allow. As he's also doing my MOT perhaps this will make him a little lenient on any borderline failure points

No, in a word. It will soon all lift and look crap. You can then remove it all and polish the paint underneath, it comes up quite well How do you remove it? My roof is covered in lifting lacquer spots after a period of neglect.

whilst were on the subject of lacquer peel. My front bumper has a few patches on it,the bonnet has the odd bit (but i need a new bonnet anyhow) rest of the car is ok. A mate suggested strip it to the paint and re-laquer it. Is that possible? How much do you think a garage would cost just to relacquer somethin?

Theres not much difference, most of the cost is the prep, if your going to do that you would be foolish not to repaint it.
